New Delhi: An assistant teacher at an anganwadi in Karnataka allegedly inflicted burn injuries on the private parts of a three-year-old boy in retaliation against the fact that he frequently wet his pants. The New Indian Express has reported that the teacher, a 28-year-old, allegedly used lit matchsticks to cause the burns. Other news outlets have reported that along with the assistant, a teacher, too, would cause these injuries. The child, who recently lost his mother, belongs to the Dalit ‘Korama’ community. The anganwadi is located at the Godekere village in Tumakuru district. The child, his father and elder brother had moved from Chikmagalur to Godekere after the mother died a couple of weeks ago. Both parents had been coffee plantation workers. The alleged incident took place last week but it was not until Monday, August 29, that the boy’s grandmother noticed the burn marks while bathing him.The grandmother had asked anganwadi employees to help toilet train the boy but did not realise that they would use such means, the report noted. The family alerted government officials and a District Child Protection Officer reached the village on the day. The child has received medical treatment at the local public health centre, the report says.No police case has been filed against the assistant teacher, whose four-year-old son attends the same anganwadi.Deputy Director of the Women and Child Welfare Department told NIE that he has issued orders to suspend her from service.
