New Delhi: The final electoral rolls after the completion of the special intensive revision (SIR) in 117 assembly constituencies in Punjab was published on Monday, October 12, and a total of 13.60 lakh names went unrecorded and marked under permanent relocation, absence, death or duplicate entries. The publication of the final rolls came amid ongoing protests against the contentious SIR in which student activists, opposition leaders and scores of citizens have been out on the streets demanding the resignation of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, who, it has been reported, acted unilaterally as opposed to the lawful consensus of the full election commission.Speaking to The Hindu, Anindita Mitra, the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), has informed that as of June 9, 2026, Punjab had 2,14,61,043 registered electors, comprising 1,11,76,866 males, 1,02,83,478 females and 699 third gender electors. She said that the electorate rose from 1,93,94,435 in the draft roll to 2,01,00,727 in the final roll. “During the house-to-house enumeration phase (June 25-August 3), Booth Level Officers [BLOs] distributed enumeration forms to registered electors and collected the same. The draft electoral roll was published on August 13, 2026, with a total of 1,93,94,435 electors. Copies of the draft electoral roll were handed over to representatives of political parties statewide for their active participation during the claims and objections period,” she was quoted as saying by The Hindu.Meanwhile, The Times of India reported that the number of voters in the state actually fell to about 2.01 crore, compared to 2.14 crore before the exercise began. This amounts to a decrease of about 6.3%.The notice phase and disposal of claims and objections was held between August 13 and October 8. “And 86,038 of the 35,49,036 electors who were issued notice were marked ineligible after extensive verification and through speaking orders. The electorate increased from 1,93,94,435 in the draft roll to 2,01,00,727 in the final roll, representing a net increase of 3.64%. The final roll comprises 1,03,76,026 male, 97,24,195 female, and 506 third gender electors,” Mitra further said. She added, “The final electoral roll of the special summary revision relating to service voters, with reference to October 1, 2026 as the qualifying date, has also been published.” Interestingly, the publication of the final rolls received a positive response from across the political board in Punjab. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab, the Congress state unit, the Shiromani Akali Dal, as well as the Bharatiya Janata Party have praised Mitra for her handling of the voter roll revision exercise, per a report in The Indian Express. The Congress and the AAP are among the national political parties that have been protesting against the SIR exercise. Their praise for the Punjab CEO came on the same day as when the INDIA bloc led a massive rally in Delhi, demanding the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.Punjab is among the states expected to head for assembly elections early next year. For our full coverage on the SIR and the issues it has brought to citizens, click here.
