New Delhi: A minor girl, reportedly 17 years old, was allegedly gang-raped by a group of boys, also minors, inside a luxury car in the upmarket area of Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad on Saturday, May 28.

The police have made three arrests in the case, of which two are juveniles. According to an NDTV report, among those arrested is the son of a local leader of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) – the party that is in power in Telangana.

According to NDTV, the boys involved in the crime belong to “politically influential” families in the city. The boys are said to be in the age group of Class XI and XII.

The incident came to light after the girl’s father lodged a complaint at Jubilee Hills Police Station on Tuesday, May 31.

Addressing a press conference on Friday night, deputy commissioner of police (West Zone) Joel Davis said a case on charges of outraging the modesty of a woman and under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was registered after the girl’s father complained.

The girl was sent to a ‘Bharosa’ support centre for women and children of the city police as she is a minor. Her statement was recorded, Davis said.

Based on the girl’s statement, the case was altered by invoking IPC section 376D (gang rape) and other relevant sections of the POCSO Act, the official said, adding that the girl could not identify the accused as they were not known to her.

Investigation teams have collected and analysed CCTV footage and other evidence, and have identified five people, he said.

An 18-year-old accused was arrested on Friday, the police official said. Prima facie, the police have evidence against three juveniles and another 18-year-old person, Davis said.

Police teams are on the job of apprehending the other accused, and they will be apprehended within 48 hours, he said. One of the juveniles is the son of a prominent person, he added.

Replying to a query, the police official said the son of an MLA was not among the five accused as per available evidence.

The investigation would continue and further action would be taken accordingly, he said.

The two juveniles would be produced before a juvenile court for their safe custody, police said in an official release.

The girl’s father, in his complaint, said his daughter went to a pub in Jubilee Hills on Saturday afternoon. Around 5:30 pm, when she was leaving the pub, a group of boys offered to drop her home. She got into a red-coloured Mercedes car, bearing the registration number TS 09 FL 6460, with a group of boys. Another set of boys followed them in an Innova car, which only had a temporary registration, according to The News Minute.

“Later on they misbehaved with my daughter and even inflicted minor injuries over her neck. Since then my daughter is in deep shock and unable to disclose the things exactly,” News Minute quoted from the complaint.

The boys drove to a secluded place in Jubilee Hills where they allegedly took turns raping the girl inside the car while others stood guard outside the car. Before the assault, the car stopped at a pastry shop, NDTV quoted police as saying.

The state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit had claimed that some of the boys involved in the sexual assault incident were related to members of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and the TRS.

Raising slogans against the police and others, BJP activists held a dharna at the Jubilee Hills police station in the city, demanding expeditious action.

On Saturday, the BJP demanded a CBI probe and the Congress called for an all party meeting to discuss the incident.

TRS working president and state minister K T Rama Rao expressed shock over the news of the rape of the minor and urged home minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali and the police to take immediate and stern action.

Ali said strict action would be taken against the offenders irrespective of their background.
