New Delhi: Amid the Delhi Police’s denial that they used pellet guns on protesters who had responded to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)’s Sansad Chalo march on July 20, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on July 24 showed the 19-year-old who had sustained pellet gun injuries and demanded that “criminal education minister” Dharmendra Pradhan must resign.“You are saying that protesters have been hit by pellet guns. I want to explain when pellet guns were fired. My brother was struck by a pellet gun when he was peacefully protesting with a tricolour in hand,” he told reporters.He then showed 19-year-old Sahil Lochab’s injuries and said that he has lost his eyesight in one eye. “They are our future. On thousands of such protesters they have used pellet guns, they have been beaten up with sticks. They were peacefully protesting because their exams papers were leaked. His mother and father from their hard-earned money got him this opportunity. The government must stop lying. The government has attacked our future,” he said.Gandhi said that the protesting students are only asking for three things-Pradhan’s resignation, action against those who brutalised protesters and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s apology.“Dharmendra Pradhan is criminal education minister. He has to be removed. He is the symbol of the collapse of our education system. He has to go. He is the reason my brother has gotten shot. He (Pradhan) is the reason thousands of people are outside on the streets and protesting,” said Gandhi.The Delhi Police has repeatedly “fact-checked” on social media claims of pellet gun usage by its personnel on July 20, even responding to journalists reporting on the matter with this. However, the allegation of pellet gun usage during this peaceful protest is being levelled not at the Delhi Police but at the RAF – which comes under the Central Reserve Police Force and has been deployed in large numbers during the ongoing protests.The Hindu had earlier reported that Lochab, who stood with Gandhi on Friday sustained pellet-like injuries. Lochab was operated on at the AIIMS Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre on July 21, and is likely to lose his eyesight on one side.Doctors have told his family that there is only a “1% chance” of vision returning to his right eye.His is the fourth confirmed person who was at Monday’s protest who sustained pellet gun-like injuries.The Wire has reported in detail about another patient currently lodged in Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC), who also underwent a surgery to remove pellet-like objects from his body, Shaikh Irshad Mansoori. The Wire has been able to confirm where Irshad was injured – over the underground Palika Bazaar in Connaught Place – and also found a video of a Rapid Action Force (RAF) jawan firing what appears to be a pellet gun at the same location and at the same time, on his abdomen. Another video being shared on social media also shows a second person with pellet-like injuries at the same site on July 20.On July 22, Outlook magazine reported that one its own reporters was fired upon by a weapon that matches the description of a gun that can fire pellets. The injuries also match what would occur after being hit by pellets.
