New Delhi: Several videos surfaced on social media showing hundreds of students protesting in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur district on Tuesday (July 28) demanding better infrastructure facilities in their school. The school principal later informed media that the issues were addressed immediately. The protests were held at Sarvodaya Inter College, a government-aided school with classes up to Class 12 and nearly 1,800 students, in Kishanpur town. In the videos, which have now become viral, students were seen carrying portraits of B.R. Ambedkar and placards that read: ‘College ki vyavastha sudharo, bacchon ka bhavishya sanwaro (Improve the college’s condition, secure the future of its students)’. They shouted slogans: ‘Humari maangey puri karo (Fulfill our demands).’The students were demanding four fans in every classroom, repair of electrical wiring in the school premises, additional desks and benches, the provision of meals as per the prescribed menu, an RO unit and a water cooler unit. The school authorities called the local police to “maintain order”.Nagina Loksabha MP and Azad Samaj Party national president Chandra Shekhar Azad shared videos and photos of the protests on X. He wrote, “This scene, which emerged in protest against these dilapidated conditions, not only reflects the children’s awareness of education and constitutional rights but also mirrors their hopes for a better future. Jai Bhim! Jai Gen-Alpha! ”In one of the videos shared by Azad, Abhishek Sonkar, a protesting student, alleged that the students don’t get clean drinking water, fans aren’t there in the classrooms, washrooms aren’t clean and midday meals had never been served in accordance with the prescribed menu. Sonkar added that they were not allowed to protest and the “principal warned them that they will be failed”.Later, principal L.B. Singh spoke to the media confirming that most of the demands of the students have been accepted.“The students have submitted their demands in writing. We have accepted their demand of water, electricity and fans. Four fans will be installed in every classroom by tomorrow , electrical wiring will be repaired, students of sixth, seventh and eight standard need desks and benches which will be provided to them within one month, meals as per the prescribed menu will be provided, an RO and one water cooler will also be provided soon,” Singh said. “Only their demand pertaining to Science can’t be fulfilled since we need laboratories and for that we need permission. Without permission we cannot have Science laboratories and classes here,” he added.Further, Singh told the Hindu that some students who study in higher grades have participated in the nationwide youth protest at Jantar Mantar, called by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which lead to the resignation of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
