New Delhi: The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), an international initiative to deliver aid to Gaza, said on Tuesday (September 9) that a drone had struck one of its main boats in Tunisian waters. All six passengers and crew were safe, it added. On the other hand, Tunisian officials said the explosion originated inside the vessel, with Tunisia’s National Guard spokesperson telling Mosaique FM radio that reports of a drone attack on the flotilla “have no basis in truth”, reported Reuters. The GSF said in its statement that Portuguese-flagged boat, which is carrying the flotilla’s steering committee, sustained fire damage to its main deck and below-deck storage. The flotilla, which aims deliver humanitarian aid to strife-torn Gaza through civilian boats is supported by delegations from 44 countries including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and Portuguese left-wing politician Mariana Mortagua.Following the drone strike, dozens of people gathered outside Tunisia’s Sidi Bou Said port, where the flotilla’s boats were docked. They waved Palestinian flags and chanted “free Palestine slogans, said the Reuters report.Since March 2, Israel has imposed a total blockade on all forms of aid – food, fuel, healthcare equipment and medicines, fresh water supplies, tents, reconstruction equipment, etc. – to Palestinians in Gaza. The GSF said that a probe into the drone attack was underway and its results would be released once available.“Acts of aggression aimed at intimidating and derailing our mission will not deter us. Our peaceful mission to break the siege on Gaza and stand in solidarity with its people continues with determination and resolve,” said the GSF.Earlier in June, The Madleen, a ship carrying life-saving humanitarian aid that was bound for Gaza, had been intercepted by Israeli forces. The ship had French physician Baptiste Andre, Swedish climate activist Greta Thunber, Dutch activist Marco van Rennes, Al Jazeera journalist Omar Faiad, French activists Pascal Maurieras and Reva Viard, French Palestinian Member of the European Parliament Rima Hassan, Spanish activist Sergio Toribio, Turkish activist Suayb Ordu, Brazilian activist Thiago Avila, French journalist Yanis Mhamdi and German activist Yasemin Acar.In a statement, the group had said its vessel was “attacked/forcibly intercepted by the Israeli military … in international waters.”“The ship was unlawfully boarded, its unarmed civilian crew abducted, and its life-saving cargo — including baby formula, food and medical supplies — confiscated,” the Freedom Flotilla Coalition had said at the time.
