New Delhi: Popular YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, Cockroach Janata Party’s Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka, and their legal affairs head Ratna Singh have been detained ahead of the protests at Jantar Mantar today, but they are not the only ones.Dipke, Das, and Ranka were detained straight from their flight upon landing in Delhi today. In a video statement recorded directly inside the aircraft as police moved in, Abhijeet Dipke declared, “This is not something even Indira Gandhi did during Emergency; this is a worse situation than that and we are all prepared for arrest.” Co-convenor Saurav Das added that authorities were attempting to stall a constitutional movement through brute force.Over a thousand CJP volunteers, activists, and peaceful citizens have been rounded up across borders, transit hubs, and surrounding streets, with authorities converting local stadiums into temporary detention centres.Left leadersLeft leaders including former MP Brinda Karat, KK Shailaja, M.V Govindan, P.K. Sreemathy, and P. Rajeev are also part of a group of leaders who have been detained and put on a bus ahead of setting out to Jantar Mantar.Brinda Karat told The Wire’s Jahnavi Sen, “Modi and this government should realise that the people of India have risen and they cannot stop them. The heart of Delhi belongs to all of its people.”Former Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, MP John Brittas and former Kerala finance minister K.N. Balagopalan marched to the Jantar Mantar barricades, saying that they were not going against Section 163 of the BNS as they are only three. They were also detained in a jeep.Left student leaders were also detained. Neha Bora, (AISA national president), Danish Ali, (joint secretary of JNUSU), Ravi Rai (CPI-ML, Delhi state secretary), and Abhigyan (AISA, state secretary) were brutally detained, while marching from Dilli Haat to Jantar Mantar. Their bus was stopped on the flyover at Jorbagh.JournalistsReports say that several journalists were also detained. The Quint has posted a video showing journalists in detention buses despite showing their press cards.The Scroll‘s executive editor Supriya Sharma has posted on X that its reporter Ayush Tiwari was detained despite showing his press card.Three Newslaundry reporters were also detained by Delhi Police, according to a statement by the news organisation.“Delhi Police have also seized Newslaundry’s official phones, which our reporters were using to carry out their reporting duties. When the journalists identified themselves as media personnel, they were reportedly told, “Koi media nahin hai”,” Newslaundry said in a statement.‘Thousands’The Hindu’s journalists Ishita Mishra and Saurabh Trivedi have posted on X that “around 4,800 people detained across Delhi during an overnight police operation” and “another 70 people were detained from the Jantar Mantar area on Saturday morning.”Indian Express has reported that at least 1,000 people were detained in the capital in the course of the night preceding October 10, and more importantly, by around 12.30 am this morning, at least 250 of them were from Delhi’s South East district, particularly from areas around Shaheen Bagh.The region was the centre of the largely women-led protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in 2019.ANI has quoted Delhi Police to say that approximately “500 people arriving in various groups from different locations have been detained.”“Around 50 individuals with criminal backgrounds have also been apprehended to prevent any disruption to the atmosphere,” police said, according to ANI’s post on X.New Delhi has been divided into 20 zones, with a detention centre established for each zone.
