New Delhi: The Delhi Police has denied permission to stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui to perform his August 28 (Sunday) scheduled show in the national capital.This comes a day after the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) wrote to the police commissioner seeking cancellation of Faruqui’s show, alleging that he “mocks Hindu gods in his shows”.The VHP Delhi president Surendra Kumar Gupta had on August 25 written to the Delhi police commissioner Sanjay Arora to cancel Faruqui’s show, the Indian Express reported.In its letter, the VHP also alleged that “communal tension arose in Bhagyanagar (Hyderabad) because of Munawar’s jokes on Hindu Gods.”Sources told the newspaper that Gupta also met senior officers in the central district Friday morning, August 26 and filed a complaint at the Kamla Market police station.The licensing unit of the Delhi Police denied the permission after the local central district police wrote a report stating that “the show will affect communal harmony in the area.”Also read: Mocking Modi Can Have Consequences, as Many Comedians Have DiscoveredJust a week ago, another show by the standup comedian was cancelled in Bengaluru because of protests from right-wing groups. This was his second show to be cancelled just in Bengaluru. Both the cancelled shows carried the same title, “Dongri to Nowhere”.This might be at least the 14th time the Muslim comedian has become a target of Hindutva groups, leading to the cancellation of his show. He had also served a month in jail last year on charges of hurting religious sentiments during a show in Indore.Last Saturday, August 20, Faruqui had hosted a standup comedy show in Hyderabad amidst tight security.The Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar had given a call to boycott the show alleging that Faruqui “mocked Hindu Gods”.In response to Faruqui’s show held in Hyderabad, Telangana BJP MLA T. Raja Singh had made ‘derogatory comments about Muslims and the Prophet’ in a YouTube video, which led to protests in the state. He was later arrested, and released a day later following court orders. The video was also taken down from social media.Earlier this year in May, Faruqui had participated in the Kangana Ranaut-hosted reality show ‘Lock-Upp’ and won the winner trophy after receiving more than 18 lakh votes.
