New Delhi: A Delhi court on Tuesday (September 22) granted seven-day interim bail to activist Sharjeel Imam in the case that the Delhi Police has alleged as a ‘larger conspiracy’ in the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots.Additional sessions judge Sameer Bajpai of Karkardooma Courts granted Imam the interim bail from October 4 to October 10, permitting him to attend his cousins’ weddings, LiveLaw reported.Imam was previously granted interim bail for 10 days, from March 20 to March 30, to attend his brother’s wedding.Speaking to ANI after the hearing, advocate Ahmad Ibrahim, representing Imam, said, “Sharjeel Imam has been granted interim bail for a period of seven days to attend the weddings of two of his cousin brothers. The functions are scheduled across Delhi and Bihar; one marriage will take place in Delhi and the other in Bihar… [Regarding the conditions], standard conditions are expected to be imposed. I have not seen the specific order yet. Last time, there was a condition requiring two sureties of Rs 50,000 each. This time as well, we are expecting similar conditions to be applied for granting him interim bail.”This comes just a day after the Delhi high court deferred to September 30 the regular bail plea of Imam, along with that of Umar Khalid, both of whom have been in jail for six years without trial in the ‘larger conspiracy’ case. The matter was adjourned on the prosecution’s request.Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju, who represents Delhi Police or the prosecution in this case, was unwell. Also read: Can We Fault Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid for Dreaming of a Better World?Imam and Khalid, both student activists at the time of arrest, were at in the forefront of organising anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests in 2019-2020.
