New Delhi: The Assam Police on Tuesday (November 11) detained a retired government school principal from Cachar district for posting a social media comment that allegedly linked Monday’s explosion in Delhi to elections. The person identified as Nazrul Islam Barbhuiya of Durgapur, Rongpur under Silchar Sadar police station, who formerly served as a headmaster, commented “Election is coming” on a Facebook post about the blast that occurred near the Red Fort in the national capital. He was taken to the office of senior superintendent of police, Cachar for questioning.Claiming that Barbhuiya was trying to “give a political angle” to the incident, Cachar additional superintendent of police (Crime) Rajat Kumar Pal said, “Yesterday, there was a very big blast in Delhi, which is being investigated by various agencies. This is national news. Some people are trying to misuse and politicise this news, because of which divisions can be created among different communities. It can lead to an increase in the chances of communal incidents.”Further, the ASP added that Barbhuiya’s activity was flagged by the district’s social media monitoring cell. Also read: Delhi Car Blast: What We Know and What We Do NotNotably, the detention came shortly after Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state government would resume its social media surveillance drive, similar to the crackdown carried out following the Pahalgam terror attack, during which nearly 100 people were arrested for online posts.Referring to the renewed monitoring effort, Sarma said on Tuesday that authorities are identifying individuals posting content that appeared to celebrate “terrorism”. “After the Pahalgam incident, and even yesterday [Monday], we saw one set of people either appreciating this incident or posting some emojis with a lot of joy. These people are terrorist supporters. We have been conducting background checks on these people since last night. Our police are engaged in catching them at any cost… And if required, we will arrest some people too… I have directed the DGP to check who these people are [and] where they are from. If they are from Assam, we have to arrest them,” he said. The car explosion in Delhi is believed to have killed at least 13 people. In a resolution passed last night, the Union cabinet called it a “terrorist incident”. The probe into the explosion is still ongoing.
