New Delhi: Two policemen were suspended in Andhra Pradesh’s Eluru district on Thursday, May 5, a day after an accused in a chain-snatching case had allegedly died of suicide in custody at Bhimadole Police Station, on Wednesday, May 4. The local district administration has tasked the revenue divisional officer (RDO) to probe into the incident.According to Hindustan Times, the brother of the deceased accused the police of torture which led to his death by suicide. “The police had tortured him for the last three days and he died by suicide because of the police torture,” the report quoted him as saying.Local activists questioned the claims made by the police, alleging that they had been “trying to distort facts” and there were “inconsistencies” over the exact duration for which the deceased had been detained at the police station before he was found dead, News Minute has reported.According to the family of the deceased, M. Apparao (36) of Pothunuru village, Denduluru block, was detained by the Bhimadole Police in connection with a chain-snatching case on April 29. However, police said he was only detained on May 3 night. On Wednesday, May 4, Apparao had his breakfast and went for a shower later where he hanged himself with a curtain, Hindustan Times quoted Eluru district superintendent of police Rahul Dev Sharma as saying.Later, the police broke open the bathroom door to take him to a hospital where he was brought dead, Sharma added.A case of custodial death has been registered by the Bhimadole Police, and the district administration has ordered a probe into the incident by local RDO, K.P. Kishore. The family of the deceased staged protests outside the police station, accusing the police of torture leading to Apparao’s death. They have been demanding an impartial inquiry into the matter.Eluru Range DIG (Deputy Inspector General of Police) G. Pala Raju issued orders suspending SI Veerabhadra Rao and CI Subba Rao on Thursday, May 5.The Human Rights Forum, a rights’ organisation, has constituted a fact-finding team to inquire into the incident while demanding a judicial probe into the matter independent of the local police alleging that there is an inconsistency between the family account and that of the police over the duration of Apparao’s detention, according to News Minute.
