New Delhi: Andhra Pradesh Police has detained a stand-up comedian in Visakhapatnam for allegedly insulting Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, marking the second such police action in the state within two days.Personnel from the Chilakalapudi police station picked up Rafiq Mohammad from his residence in Visakhapatnam at approximately 8 pm on April 16. The detention is based on a First Information Report (FIR No. 90/2026) registered at 10 pm on April 15.According to the FIR, the complaint was filed by Sayana Sivannarayana, 42, a resident of Machilipatnam. Sivannarayana stated that he has worked with the Jana Sena Party (JSP) for the past eight years and currently serves as the party’s Guduru Vice Chairman for water bodies. The complainant alleged that while reviewing posts on X on April 15, he found circulating videos in which Mohammad allegedly made abusive and derogatory remarks against Kalyan and minister Nara Lokesh. Sivannarayana stated that the remarks were provocative and capable of inciting hatred among different communities and political parties, thereby disturbing public peace. The FIR noted that Pradeep Reddy Chinta and Sairam Venkat had previously condemned the videos through their respective accounts on X. While Pradeep Reddy is YSRCP general secretary in charge of NRI affairs, Sairam Venkat appears to run an account on X with 17 followers. The complaint also highlighted that Venkat had publicly shared Mohammad’s Instagram account, his contact number, and his location in Visakhapatnam. In the video that appears to have led to the complaint, Mohammad referenced Kalyan’s personal life and his recent political appointment. The comedian quipped: “You Vizag people have rejected our Pawan Kalyan… Vizag people not only rejected Pawan Kalyan, even his three wives also rejected him, dude.”In another joke that has been cited by Venkat in his X post, Mohammad said: “Pawan Kalyan has been named as the Deputy Chief Minister. I feel that Pawan Kalyan should be the minister of external affairs… because he is the only Indian who made a Russian go down.”Sub-Inspector Udimudi Chanti is in charge of the investigation. The police have registered the case under Section 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which penalises statements conducing to public mischief and the circulation of false information intended to create enmity.Mohammad’s detention establishes a rapid pattern of police action against artists over political satire in the state. The incident occurred less than 48 hours after Kakinada police personnel detained another stand-up comedian, Anudeep Katikala, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on April 14. Katikala was similarly accused of damaging Kalyan’s reputation through a comedy set. Both complaints were initiated by local JSP office-bearers.
