New Delhi: Videos appearing to show Delhi Police personnel entering the Gurdwara Bangla Sahib in what appeared to be the height of the clampdown on the planned protests in the national capital on October 10 have invoked outrage.Thousands of protesters had been shut out of Jantar Mantar, which was under a lockdown with thousands of police and security personnel forcibly and brutally detaining peaceful marchers and non-protesters alike. Metro and trains had been shut, with app rides also virtually at a close. According to the Hindustan Times, hundreds of mainly student protesters had sheltered at the Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, near the Election Commission of India’s office. While some accounts have it that police were allowed only up till a particular point near the entry gate, others have said that some police personnel entered the site. Videos showed them wearing shoes, something many objected against.“Early in the morning, around 8am, police came to detain them, but the management did not allow them to enter the gurdwara. Some police personnel entered the premises near the main gate and dragged some students out, but the management firmly asked the police to leave and not enter the premises of the gurdwara,” Hindustan Times quoted a pilgrim who was staying at the gurdwara as having said. The report said that when police urged the management to push the protesters out, the management refused. Several social media accounts also attested to this.O Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, Im an atheist and I bow my head before the scared spirit of your selfless service. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 https://t.co/C2ScPjznR0— RAHUL (@RahulSeeker) October 10, 2026Several accounts by eyewitnesses said that police were collected in very high numbers throughout the day outside the holy spot, continuously detaining people. The Delhi police, after first saying videos of its personnel entering Bangla Sahib was misleading, then deleted the clarification.Delhi Police FactCheck Deleted 🙄Delhi Police first illegally entered Gurudwara Bangla Sahib which is a sin , then tried to intimidate those who shared the video. They claimed it’s an old video. When confronted, Delhi Police deleted its tweet.Shameless BJP Govt !!Shameless BJP Police !!— Saurabh Bharadwaj (@Saurabh_MLAgk) October 10, 2026Shiromani Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal is among those who have decried this.I strongly condemn the Delhi Police entering the sacred premises of Gurudwara Shri Bangla Sahib and the alleged atrocities against protesters, particularly women during today’s dharna.Disrespecting the sanctity of a Gurudwara and manhandling women who were taking shelter while exercising their right to protest is completely unacceptable! The Delhi Police must be held accountable for its actions.#DelhiProtest #JantarMantar— Harsimrat Kaur Badal (@HarsimratBadal_) October 10, 2026Ahead of the protest, police also made announcements in mosques, in an attempt to dissuade people from attending the protests in what appears to be a clear amping up of state attention on minority institutions of faith.
