Ayodhya: The fourth complaint against the alleged theft of funds from the Ram temple in Ayodhya was submitted today, July 2, at the Ram Janmabhoomi Police Station, by lawyers of the Faizabad Bar Association.Police did not allow the planned march of lawyers from the district court to the police station, and instead permitted only five lawyers to come into the station and submit the complaint.Speaking to The Wire, an official at the Ram Janmbhoomi Police Station who didn’t want to be identified confirmed that complaint has been received and due investigation will be done. The complaint names Champat Rai, Gopal Rao and Anil Mishra and asks that an FIR be filed against them.Champat Rai, general secretary of the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, and trustee Anil Mishra, are at the centre of the missing donations. Both have resigned since the scandal intensified. Gopal Rao is a temple administration assistant. The complaint says that the union and its members “are very hurt by the theft of devotee’s donation money and valuables” and are submitting a written complaint for the “Rs 10 lakh stolen by Champat Rai, Rs 58 lakh stolen by Anil Mishra and Gopal Ji which was recovered before the FIR was filed, and for the money and jewellery stolen by trustee Krishna Mohan which was kept hidden to lead the investigation astray.”The complaint said that all the trust members “are also complicit in this theft and orchestrated a planned conspiracy to steal the donation money.”The complaint also highlighted the question of why the Special Investigation Team is not public. It noted how the report submitted by the SIT to Sanjay Prasad (IAS officer and representative of the UP government) has yet not been made public. The bar association said that its members are fervent devotees and many have been a part of the Ram Janmabhoomi agitation, helped fight cases, made donations, and do so now as well. “We are hurt by allegations that are getting graver by the day,” the Hindi complaint says. The only FIR in the matter was filed by the Ram Janmabhoomi Police Station on June 25, based on a complaint from Krishna Mohan, a member of the temple trust itself. The Wire had earlier reported that on June 19, a former ‘kar sevak’, Santosh Dubey, had joined two others before him in lodging compliants about the alleged theft with local police in Ayodhya. All three complaints had named Champat Rai. No FIR was filed in these cases. When asked about the status of other three complaints filed earlier, the Ram Janmbhoomi Police Station official said, “Nature of complaints was the same related to the daan patra and SIT is investigating the same.” The complaints filed earlier, however, do not form the basis of the current FIR registered on 25 June, which was filed on the basis of a complaint by Krishna Mohan.Note: This report has been updated with details from the Bar Association’s complaint.
