New Delhi: Media reports of a 35-year-old woman allegedly being gangraped in Assam’s Nagaon district last week have sent shock waves across the state. This is the third such incident reported from the district since 2014.Local reports quoting district superintendent of police said a special investigation team was at once formed to investigate the case. Acting on a tip, the district police managed to arrest all the eight accused, belonging to Kakatigaon, on March 16, a day after the incident occurred.The accused have been identified as Nazrul Islam alias Mazat Ali (prime accused), Sultan Ali, Momtaz Ali, Ikramul Haque, Farzul Haque, Majidul Ahmad, Habibur Rahman and Nazirul Haque.According to the district police, the victim, accompanied by her husband, was traveling by train to Hojai from Jagiroad, 45 kms from the capital city Guwahati. Upon deboarding at the Chaparmukh station post-midnight, they were convinced by the main accused to go to his house for the night as they would be able to get public transport for their upward journey to Hojai, 39 kms away, only in the morning.Local reports stated that Islam phoned the other accused to reach an isolated place and allegedly raped the woman, beat up her husband and looted Rs 20,000 from them. Reports said both of them, upon regaining senses, reached the local police station to file an FIR, based on which the accused were arrested a day later.On March 17, a local court sent the accused to four days of police remand.Earlier, a case of gangrape of a 22-year-old woman was reported from Nagaon town in February 2014, and before that, a 19-year-old girl was allegedly gangraped by a group of seven men in Amoni area of the district. Though some accused have been arrested in these cases, none has been convicted yet.In a 2015 news report quoting Assam government sources, The Telegraph said courts in Nagaon have the highest number of pending cases of crime against women in the state.
