New Delhi: Bulldozers were sent by the newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party-led (BJP-led) government in West Bengal to demolish a five-storey building being used as office by Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee in Diamond Harbour on Saturday (July 18), reported The Telegraph.Earlier on June 30, notices were issued on behalf of the South 24-Parganas Municipal Corporation to the owners of the building, that included Abhishek Banerjee’s father Amit Banerjee, with a hearing scheduled on July 15.The local administration maintained that since the owners didn’t appear for the hearing, they had to resort to the demolition drive.Posting a video from the demolition site, in what looks like items from the office being loaded on trucks, Banerjee, on July 19 took to X and wrote: “Videos show West Bengal police carrying away trunks filled with laptops, printers, documents, tables, chairs, and other furniture alongside BJP goons. This was not demolition – it was theft in uniform, carried out with utter contempt for the rule of law and while the matter remains subjudice before the high court. Those meant to uphold the law have become lawbreakers.”The lawlessness in Bengal is on full display.Despite SC & HC rulings holding bulldozer demolitions unconstitutional, my Lok Sabha constituency office at Amtala was demolished yesterday.Videos show @WBPolice carrying away trunks filled with laptops, printers, documents,… pic.twitter.com/N1eJkIip0l— Abhishek Banerjee (@abhishekaitc) July 19, 2026Reacting to the news of demolition of Abhishek Banerjee’s Amtala office in South 24-Parganas district, West Bengal Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul said, “The action has sent a clear message that the law is equal for all.”Earlier in May, during his first public meeting after winning elections, West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari had said that all the properties belonging to Banerjee will be accounted for.“Honourable Nephew. You have 24 properties in Kolkata. Leaps and Bounds (a company owned by Trinamool general secretary), there is a palace-like office at Amtala. I have sought details of all property from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation,” the West Bengal chief minister was quoted as saying.
