Just a month into the BJP government’s tenure in West Bengal, a distinct style of governance has begun to take root. From stricter regulations on cattle slaughter and a complex application process for a women’s cash transfer scheme to actions against suspected illegal entrants, the administration has moved swiftly to stamp its political identity on the state. Most controversially, eviction drives using bulldozers have targeted hawkers and small vendors at railway stations across Kolkata and its suburbs, threatening the livelihoods of some of Bengal’s poorest residents. The demolitions have met with resistance from opposition parties and local communities, who argue that evictions without rehabilitation are unlawful. In this discussion moderated by The Wire‘s Soumashree Sarkar, Left leader Srijan Bhattacharyya and journalist Aparna Bhattacharya examine the politics, consequences and wider implications of these developments in Bengal.
