New Delhi: The ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has called for a “new secular” alliance in Tamil Nadu which will include almost all former alliance partners of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Tamil Nadu chief minister and TVK supremo Vijay has called for a meeting of the leaders of these alliance partners at a luxury five-star resort on the scenic East Coast Road (ECR) on Wednesday (July 1), reported Deccan Herald.The parties invited for the meeting include the Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI (M)), Communist Party of India (CPI), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK).Notably, all these parties are former constituents of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA).At present, apart from the two MDMK MLAs who refused to resign because they were elected on the DMK’s symbol, all the other parties are already part oof the TVK-led Tamil Nadu government, reported DH.“This meeting was long pending, and it is primarily to thank the leaders of the political parties that supported the TVK during a crucial period,” a source told the newspaper.Senior TVK leaders N Anand and Aadhav Arjuna are meeting leaders of these political parties personally to invite them for Wednesday’s meeting.The meeting comes at a time when the TVK is welcoming All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) leaders joining the party after resigning as MLAs. The TVK has been criticised over allegations that it is indulging in “horse-trading” to manufacture a majority of its own in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly.At the moment, TVK’s individual strength is 107 and it enjoys the support of 13 members from different parties support the government from inside or outside.While the Congress, VCK, IUML, and MDMK should not have any problem in immediately joining the it is yet to be seen remains to be seen how the Left parties will react to the development.
