New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday (June 28) rebuked Madhya Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) minister Kunwar Vijay Shah for failing to tender a proper apology for his remarks directed at Colonel Sofiya Qureshi at the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, wherein he had described her as “sister of terrorists”, alluding to her Muslim identity.“What do you mean by apology like this? This man has been testing our patience…this was the statement he made on the first date…where is it on record? That (online apology) shows his intentions, that makes us more suspicious of his bonafides…” said Justice Surya Kant told Shah’s counsel on Monday, reported LiveLaw.Justice Kant made the remarks as a bench comprising him and Justice Joymala Bagchi was hearing with two petitions filed by Shah.In one petition, Shah has challenged Madhya Pradesh high court’s suo motu order for registration of an FIR against him. The second petition is against the High Court order of May 15, where the bench concerned expressed dissatisfaction with the FIR registered against Shah and said that it would monitor the investigation to ensure it takes place fairly. The court had earlier constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising 3 senior IPS officers, not belonging to the State of Madhya Pradesh, to investigate the FIR against Shah. The bench on Monday asked an SIT member about the time period required to complete the investigation. In May, the top court had slammed Shah for his remarks, saying that the entire nation was ashamed of him.Shah, a cabinet minister of Madhya Pradesh and an MP in Lok Sabha, had made derogatory, communal remarks against Colonel Qureshi, who was one of the faces of the press briefings on Operation Sindoor, along with Wing Commander Vyomika Singh.“Jinhone humari betiyon ke sindoor ujade the…humne unki behen bhej kar ke unki aisi ki taisi karwayi (Those [terrorists] who wiped out the vermilion of our sisters [in the Pahalgam attack]… we avenged these people by sending their sister to destroy them),” Shah had said, repeating at least thrice that their community’s sister was sent by Modiji to destroy them. The Madhya Pradesh high court had initiated a suo motu case against the minister. It had ordered a criminal case to be registered urgently over his derogatory remarks against Colonel Qureshi, stating that his comments were “disparaging and dangerous, not just to the officer in question but to the armed forces itself”.
