Chennai: Tamil Nadu chief minister M.K. Stalin’s proposal to pass resolution in the state assemblies against local governors delaying Bills passed has found support in two states so far. After Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has sent a letter to Stalin supporting his effort on passing a resolution against the governor.“Joint action against Governors’ moves that curtail State Govts’ functioning and threaten our federal principles is imperative. Thiru M K Stalin’s proposal for coordinated efforts in this regard is highly appreciated. Responded offering full support for future actions,” said Vijayan in the letter.Stalin took to Twitter to thank Vijayan. “Thank you Hon Pinarayi Vijayan for your prompt response to my letter & extending full support. TN & Kerala have traditionally stood as a bulwark against any attempt to erode state autonomy. We will win in our crusade against the gubernatorial overreach too,” tweeted Stalin in response to the letter from Vijayan.Thank you Hon @PinarayiVijayan for your prompt response to my letter & extending full support.TN & Kerala have traditionally stood as a bulwark against any attempt to erode state autonomy. Even though the time period for giving assent to the bills is not specifically mentioned in the Constitution, it has to be a reasonable one,” said Vijayan in the letter.Similarly on April 15, Kejriwal said: “We condemn the actions of Centre & its representatives to usurp & constrain powers of non-BJP State Govts. I support Shri M K Stalin’s efforts. We will also table a resolution in Delhi Vidhan Sabha urging the Centre to fix time limits for Governors/LG to carry out their functions.”We condemn the actions of Centre & its representatives to usurp & constrain powers of non-BJP State Govts. Ravi. More than 20 bills are pending with the Governor and after several reminders and passing a resolution in the assembly, the Governor a few days ago signed the Bill regulating online gaming which was once sent back to the assembly. In the Tamil Nadu assembly on Tuesday, state health minister M. Subramanian said that one more Bill has been returned by the governor. “The governor has returned the Siddha University Bill and even though it was re-sent to the Governor, he is yet to sign it. Siddha medical doctors and those who are involved in Siddha medicine want a university, and following this Stalin had announced that a university will be set up in the state exclusively for Siddha medicine on September 2, 2021,” said Subramanian in the assembly on Tuesday. He said it is not known why the governor is against the Siddha medicine. We only request him to sign the bill at the earliest, said Subramanian.Governor Ravi and Stalin are hardly meeting each other. The relationship is tense as the governor has refused to sign Bills passed by the assembly. Inside the assembly as well as outside, Stalin as well as DMK alliance partners are protesting against the governor for delaying Bills. The relationship between the two went for a toss when Ravi refused to read the full governor’s address in the assembly on January 9. Even as the governor was sitting in the assembly hearing the translation of his address, a resolution was moved and adopted that only the original governor’s address will be on the assembly record. Following this, the governor walked out in a huff.Governor Ravi on his part is busy meeting students of schools and colleges as well as several others in the Raj Bhavan as well as during tours. On Tuesday, Ravi met representatives of Devendra Kula Vellalar and Thevars at the Ramanathapuram Circuit House and received memoranda from them.“Dr Kalam, one of India’s brightest sons and an inspirational leader, came from a modest background and made unparalleled achievements because he believed in and worked hard for his dream. Discipline is key, discipline yourself, respect your parents, use social media productively, balance your play time, study hard, eat well & take care of your health,” said Ravi to students of Kendriya Vidhyalaya at Mandapam. While Telangana chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao has approached the Supreme Court seeking an order to the state governor to sign Bills, Stalin on the other hand is making efforts to bring all opposition party chief ministers to pass resolutions seeking a timeframe for the governors to sign Bills.“We are ready to have good relationship with the governor but at the same time, he must not delay the Bills sent to him. The governor must sign the bills immediately, and till then we will be protesting against him in the assembly as well as outside,” said a DMK minister not willing to be named.
