New Delhi: Since the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Union government is yet to reveal the agenda for the special session of parliament it has called starting September 18, the Congress party decided at a meeting on Tuesday (September 6) that Sonia Gandhi will write to Prime Minister Narendra on the matter. The letter, sent on Wednesday, detailed issues that the party – and INDIA alliance – think require parliament’s attention. The Congress conveyed this decision to other members of the INDIA alliance at a meeting that was held at Mallikarjun Kharge house, also on Tuesday. However, according to The Indian Express, the party has said that this letter was written by Gandhi as Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson, and not on behalf of the alliance. “It will neither be a joint letter nor on behalf of the INDIA alliance. It will be written by the Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson on her letterhead,” an opposition leader told the newspaper.Hindustan Times, however, reported that Gandhi’s decision to write to Modi was endorsed by all members of the INDIA bloc.Gandhi’s letter highlighted the need for parliamentary discussion on nine issues including the fresh allegations against the Adani Group, price rise and unemployment, farmers’ demands for MSP rise, the Manipur situation, rise in communal tensions, the need for a caste census, China’s occupation of Indian territory and Centre-state relations.Sonia Gandhi’s letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Kharge said the Modi government is convening a special session of parliament for the first time without spelling out the agenda. “No one from any opposition party has been consulted or informed. This is not the way to run a democracy,” he said after the INDIA bloc meeting. “Everyday, this government plants a story in media of a prospective ‘agenda’, thereby creating a smokescreen of diversion from real issues burdening the people.”“The BJP wants to keep key issues like price rise, unemployment, Manipur, China’s transgressions, CAG reports, scams and weakening of institutions aside and cheat our people,” Kharge added.“The INDIA parties discussed the way forward for the special session. We shall not be deterred in raising people’s issues, we intend to keep our focus on these. Let the BJP know — Bharat Judega, INDIA Jeetega,” said the Congress party president.
