New Delhi: A BBC News Hindi investigation has revealed that six registered unrecognised political parties (RUPP) from Gujarat received higher donations than all national parties except the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the year 2023-2024, despite fielding only one or two candidates during elections, that too rarely.The BBC News Hindi report, published on Friday (September 4), identified these parties as the Aam Janmat Party, Bharatiya National Janata Dal, Garib Kalyan Party, New India United Party, Satyawadi Rakshak Party and the Swatantrata Abhivyakti Party.As per the report, Aam Janmat Party garnered over Rs 620 crore in donations during 2023-2024, substantively bypassing the Congress’s Rs 281 crore collection that same year. The RUPP fielded a single candidate, in a single constituency, during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.Aam Janmat Party’s Facebook page lists Anamika Paswan, who is currently the BJP’s state vice president in Bihar, as its national president. Paswan told BBC News Hindi that she had resigned from the Aam Janmat Party in 2022 itself, after which the party was shifted from Bihar to Ahmedabad in Gujarat.According to the report, Aam Janmat Party’s donations were significantly lower during the years 2020 and 2022, following which there was a sharp spike in funding, resulting in a massive collective of Rs 216 crore in 2022-2023.When reporters reached the party’s Ahmedabad office, they discovered that it has been closed for the past six months, with no party official to be found. Furthermore, Dharmendra Vaishnav, the party’s treasurer, informed them that the Aam Janmat Party had been shut down after all its members submitted their resignation.Even though the party is officially non-operational, the reporters were able to transfer money to its listed back account. The parties also reportedly spend hundreds of crores on public welfare, although the did not have any concrete records or bank transactions of the same when asked.Similarly, the offices of the Garib Kalyan Party, Satyawadi Rakshak Party and the New India United Party were also found deserted. Additionally, president of the New India United Party Amit Chaturvedi told BBC News Hindi that the party supported the BJP from their “hearts and minds,” when questioned if they backed any other political party.Meanwhile, both the parties’ websites proved futile, with non-functioning phone numbers and missing audit reports.India is home to over 2,800 political parties. Of these, six are considered as national parties, while 67 are regional parties. The remaining more that 2,727 parties fall under the RUPP categorisation.The six RUPPs investigated in the BBC News Hindi report collected a sum of Rs 1,700 during the fiscal year 2023-2024, compared to the Rs 1,480 collected by all national parties – Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, Communist Party of India (Marxist) and National People’s Party – excluding the BJP.While these five national parties fielded 893 candidates in the 2024 general election, the six Gujarat-based RUPPs only managed to field a total of 15 candidates, in spite of having over Rs 1,700 crore as funding to allegedly aid electoral functions. Four of these six parties were based in a single area of Ahmedabad, known as Naroda.Previously, Dainik Bhaskar August 2025 report had claimed that 10 “anonymous parties” in Gujarat had received Rs 4,300 crore between 2019-2020 and 2023-2024, even though they seldomly contested polls.
