New Delhi: Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan referred to Jyotiraditya Scindia as ‘Vibhishan’, the brother of Ravana who deserted Ravana and sided with Ram in the battle of Mahabharata in the ancient Hindu epic, during a party meet in Bhopal welcoming Scindia on Thursday.
According to a report in Times of India, in a jibe aimed at the Kamal Nath-led Congress government in Madhya Pradesh, Chouhan said, “Ravan ki Lanka agar puri tarah jalani hai to Vibhishan ki to jaroorat hoti hai. Aur ab Scindia ji hamare saath hain. Milkar Ladenge, inko dharashai karenge (if Ravana’s Lanka is to be fully burned, then Vibhishan is needed. And now Scindia ji is with us. Will fight together, crush them)”.
We will take a vow today that till we set afire Lanka of your sins, injustice, atrocities, corruption and terror, we will not relax and sit quietly, Chouhan asserted.
Previously, Chouhan and Scindia had traded barbs in the run-up to the assembly elections in 2018 when Scindia had likened Chouhan to “Kalyug’s Mama” similar to the characters of ‘Kansa’ and ‘Shakuni’ mentioned in the Mahabharata. Chouhan had, in response, campaigned around the slogan, “Maaf karo Maharaj hamara neta toh Shivraj (Sorry Maharaj, our leader is Shivraj)” to take on the Congress.
However, after Scindia joined the BJP after quitting Congress, Chouhan said, “For some Congress leaders when Scindia ji was in Congress he was a Maharaja, now he is a mafia? These are their double standards of Congress.”
Chouhan further said, “If anyone was popular among Congress leaders, it was Maharaj, so we used ‘Maaf karo Maharaj’ slogan. Now Shivraj and Maharaj are together in the BJP.”
“This is a joyous day for the BJP and me personally. Today, I remember (his grandmother) Rajmata (Vijaya Raje) Scindia. Jyotiraditya Scindia has become a member of the BJP family. The entire (Scindia) family is with BJP. They have a tradition where politics is a medium to serve people,” Chouhan said.
Scindia, on the other hand, noted that political differences and ideology could be different but not a difference of mind.
Scindia also said that even his father (the late Madhavrao Scindia) was framed by the then Congress government in the hawala scam. He promised to work hard for BJP workers and said “For your every drop of sweat, I will shed 100 drops of sweat and if needed I will give my blood for you”.
Congress state media coordinator Narendra Saluja said, “calling someone ‘Vibhishan’ is derogatory. Shivraj used the word for Scindia which makes the role and status of Scindia in BJP very much clear”.
