New Delhi: Signalling that all is still not well within the Rajasthan Congress, Sachin Pilot took potshots at his rival Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday, noting that the praise the chief minister got from Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “interesting” and should not be taken lightly. The former Rajasthan deputy chief minister, speaking to the media at his residence in Jaipur, said: “It’s interesting that the PM praised (CM) yesterday. It mustn’t be taken lightly. Because the PM similarly praised Ghulam Nabi Azad in Parliament and we all saw what happened.”Pilot was referring to the fact that Azad quit the Congress, forming a regional party and insinuated that Gehlot might follow suit.#WATCH | Rajasthan Cong MLA Sachin Pilot says, “…I find the heaps of praises by PM Modi (on CM Gehlot y’day)very interesting. PM had similarly praised GN Azad in Parliament. We saw what happened after that. It was an interesting development y’day. Shouldn’t be taken lightly…” pic.twitter.com/QBknOLVWJT— ANI (@ANI) November 2, 2022On Tuesday, Gehlot and Modi shared the stage at an event to commemorate the Mangarh massacre of Bhil tribals in 1913 at the hands of the British. According to Indian Express, Modi praised Gehlot, saying, “Ashokji and I have worked together as chief ministers. He was the senior-most in our lot. He is still one of the senior-most chief ministers among those who are sitting on the stage right now.”Pilot also broke his silence over the political crisis caused in September by a group of MLAs loyal to Gehlot. The Rajasthan chief minister was the Gandhi family’s preferred candidate for the party president post. And because of the ‘One Person, One Post’ norm, he would have had to step down as chief minister. While a meeting of the Congress legislature party (CLP) was called on September 25 to determine the successor, around 90 MLAs held a parallel meeting where they opposed Pilot – the presumed favourite to succeed Gehlot – becoming the chief minister. On Wednesday, Pilot suggested the party will soon take action against three Gehlot loyalists – Shanti Dhariwal, Mahesh Joshi and Dharmendra Rathore – who were given notices by the All India Congress Commiteee (AICC) for indiscipline.Pilot noted that Gehlot had apologised and asked for forgiveness from the party and then president Sonia Gandhi.“The AICC observed that it’s a case of indiscipline and the party had sent notices to the three leaders, who have responded to it. But since the Congress is an old and disciplined party with the same rules for everyone, action should be taken against them soon,” added Pilot. “I am sure new president Mallikarjun Kharge will take action,” he said, according to Indian Express. He said the state’s assembly elections will be held in 13 months time and whatever decisions are to be taken, like the rebellion at the CLP meeting, the AICC would take them very soon.Pilot further said rules and discipline of the party apply to all, adding that he hoped Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge would take a decision on the matter soon. While notices were issued to parliamentary affairs minister Shanti Dhariwal, chief whip and Public Health Engineering Department minister Mahesh Joshi and Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation chairman Dharmendra Rathore, no action has been taken yet.Leaders should maintain discipline: GehlotGehlot shot back at Pilot, saying that Congress party leaders should “maintain discipline” and refrain from making political statements.“AICC general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal has asked not to give statements. We, too, want all leaders to maintain discipline,” Gehlot told reporters during his Alwar visit. He said the party’s focus should be on retaining the government in Rajasthan.“It is our objective to form the government again. We have given good governance and brought so many schemes in the state, which has never happened before. We have started working towards retaining the state on good governance,” he said.(With PTI inputs)Note: This article was updated with Gehlot’s reaction after it was published.
