New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh police have arrested two people – Hassan Ahmed and Mohammad Asif – out of the several booked for allegedly grilling chicken and smoking a hookah on a boat in Prayagraj. Last week, a 30-second video surfaced, showing the men on a boat in a river. Hindutva groups and supporters that the boat was at the Sangam, a point of confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna, considered holy by Hindus.The Wire has not been able to independently verify the contents of the video or whether it was indhookaheed shot on the said location.In UP's Prayagraj, a video of couple of men smoking Hookah and roasting chicken while picnicking on a boat has surfaced. A police probe is underway to ascertain the identity of people seen in the video. pic.twitter.com/Ev83MAiAEj— Piyush Rai (@Benarasiyaa) August 31, 2022In the FIR lodged on Wednesday, August 31, six people were accused of hurting religious sentiments and defiling a place of worship, the police said.“We will ensure that the accused are arrested soon, and strict legal action is taken against them”, the Prayagraj police had said in a statement.Daraganj Police on Saturday, September 3, arrested Hassan Ahmed and Mohammad Asif near the Ganga Murti trisection.Circle Officer Aastha Jaiswal had said Daraganj is a pilgrimage site and people are expected not to do anything that can hurt religious sentiments. “The rest of the accused are being identified and arrests will be made soon,” he said.Several on social media had pointed out that a river, even if a place of worship, is a collective resource. Moreover, the men were on their private transport, it has been alleged, and thus not causing disruption. The tradition of smoking, especially by holy men and women at Hindu religious sites like the Kumbh Mela, has also been pointed out.(With PTI inputs)
