Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Economic Advisory Council (PM-EAC) published a report on May 7 which claimed that the Muslim population rose by about 43% from 1950 to 2015. They used a decadal census to arrive at a calculation which did not make a cut with mathematicians. It was actually an increase of four percentage points only. But what is more important is this report came right in the middle of the elections. And, at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is himself leading this skewed narrative with him saying at a political rally in Rajasthan that Muslims “beget more children.”While the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party took this line on Muslims’ contribution to the population and projected it as a major concern, it contradicted its own government’s reports and parliamentary replies in which the government said population control efforts had borne fruit and it was not a major worry. To know more about how his narrative is bad in science and more, watch this discussion in Hindi between Banjot Kaur and Ajay Kumar.
