Kolkata: A six-year-old boy died in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district after he was hit by the car in which Trinamool Congress MP Abu Taher Khan was travelling on Wednesday, November 16.The incident occurred near the Piprekhali village, through which Khan was travelling from Nowda area to Berhampore town in the district, according to local media.The area has seen protests and road blockades since news of the death spread.The boy’s age has been variously reported as four, five and seven years as well.Police have arrested the car’s driver and seized the vehicle.According to police officials and eyewitnesses, the boy was playing when he came in front of the vehicle.“The boy was grievously injured, and the MP took him to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. We have arrested the driver of the car Alamgir Mondal and seized the vehicle. A case has also been lodged,” PTI quoted a senior district police officer as having said.The boy’s father Hamidul has alleged that the MP’s car was speeding. An eyewitness told Anandabazar Patrika as much too.Khan has denied his car was speeding. Some outlets have reported Khan as having said that the child was not kept under watch while he was playing.He later told reporters that he would visit the boy’s village on Thursday during the burial ceremony and meet his parents.(With PTI inputs)
