Kolkata: Senior Trinamool Congress leader Rajib Banerjee, who recently quit the Mamata Banerjee cabinet in Bengal, on Friday resigned from the post of MLA.Banerjee had been forest minister until January 22, when he quit citing that he was ‘deeply hurt’ by TMC leaders’ personal attacks at him.The timing of his resignation, which comes on the same day as Bharatiya Janata Party’s former chief Amit Shah’s visit to Kolkata, has led to speculation on his imminent move to BJP.BJP has claimed that several TMC leaders are set to join the party during Shah’s two-day visit to Bengal. Shah will go to the Matua-dominated Thakurnagar, along with Mayapur, Uluberia, Ballygunge and Howrah.Banerjee, who represented the Domjur assembly seat in Howrah, met Speaker Biman Banerjee at the state assembly and submitted his resignation letter early on Friday.“I have resigned as the MLA of the state assembly. I submitted my resignation letter to the speaker. I thank my party supremo Mamata Banerjee for providing me the opportunity to serve the masses,” Banerjee, a two-time MLA, said.“In the days to come, I would continue to serve the people of the Domjur constituency,” he added.
