New Delhi: The Congress party on Tuesday, October 31, released its fourth and fifth lists of candidates for the upcoming Rajasthan assembly elections. The fourth list contains the party’s nominees for 56 constituencies and the fifth contains just five candidates. The party so far has announced candidates for 156 assembly segments and is yet to announce nominees for the remaining 44 constituencies. The state will go to polls on November 25.In the fourth list, the Congress has changed candidates for 35 seats and decided not to give tickets to eight sitting MLAs. Out of the 56 seats in the fourth list, the party won only 13 seats in 2018, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 33. Five were won by independent candidates, three by Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), one by the Bharatiya Tribal Party, and one by the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP).Illustration: Pariplab ChakrabortyIn the fifth list, the Congress announced five more candidates for the Phulera, Jaisalmer, Pokhran, Asind, and Jahazpur assembly segments. Three of these are currently held by the BJP. Congress currently holds Jaisalmer and Pokhran. Manish Mewara of Congress, who lost the Asind seat to the BJP’s Jabbar Singh Sankhala by just 154 votes, did not get the ticket this time around. Instead, independent candidate Hangami Lal Mewar, was fielded.Out of the six MLAs who had won the previous election on the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)’s ticket and later joined the Congress, four have been retained by the grand old party. Deepchandra Khera from Kishangarh Bas and Jogendra Awana from Nadbai received the party tickets. However, Sandeep Kumar, who also fought on a BSP ticket and joined the Congress, did not get the ticket this time around.In the third list, released sometime back, Congress was already betting on two candidates – Lakhan Singh Meena and Wajid Ali – who switched from the BSP to Congress. Meena, fielded in Karauli, won last time around with a margin of 9,562 votes against the Congress’s Darshan Singh. Two candidates who switched from the BJP to the Congress will be contesting from Kishangarh, and Manvendra Singh, the son of senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh, will contest from Siwana in Barmer district.The Congress, which hopes to retain power in the desert state, has fielded its national spokesperson Gourav Vallabh from Udaipur City.The eight sitting MLAs who were denied tickets in the fourth list are Khiladi Lal Meena, Bharat Singh Kundanpur, Bharosi Lal Jatav, Heera Lal Meghwal, Johari Lal Meena, Babu Lal Bairwa, Sandeep Yadav, and Rajkumar Gaur.
