New Delhi: Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi was among senior party leaders detained during the party’s nationwide agitation drive during Sonia Gandhi’s questioning by the Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday, July 26.The Congress had spoken of staging a ‘satyagraha’ all over the country to protest against the ED’s summons to Gandhi in the money laundering case linked to the National Herald newspaper.Gandhi has appeared before the ED for questioning for the second time today.Rahul Gandhi, along with party MPs and other workers had gathered at the Vijay Chowk in New Delhi to march towards the Rashtrapati Bhavan to draw the President’s attention to the alleged misuse of central agencies by the government, but were stopped by the police.Gandhi was put in a police bus but officials did not disclose where he was being taken. Other Congress MPs were detained and taken away in separate police buses.“India is a police state, Modi is a king,” Rahul Gandhi told reporters.“I am not going anywhere. We wanted to go towards the President’s house. But the police are not allowing us,” Gandhi said. pic.twitter.com/M0kUXcwH8L— Rahul Gandhi (@RahulGandhi) July 26, 2022” By misusing the police and agencies, even by arresting us, you will never be able to silence us,” he wrote on Twitter.Gandhi told reporters that discussions were not being allowed in parliament on the topic either.जंजीर बढ़ा कर साध मुझे,हाँ, हाँ दुर्योधन! बाँध मुझे।बाँधने मुझे तो आया है,जंजीर बड़ी क्या लाया है?इतिहास दोहरा रहा है…#SatyagrahaWithSoniaGandhi pic.twitter.com/wroc7cLtk9— Congress (@INCIndia) July 26, 2022“All Congress MPs stopped at Vijay Chowk and prevented from marching to Rashtrapati Bhavan. Forcibly arrested. Now we are in police buses being taken to a place only PM and HM know where ,” Congress Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh tweeted.“The Delhi Police harassed us. They have taken almost all the 75 MPs under detention and are taking them to unknown places,” said Manickam Tagore.बड़ी खबर…कांग्रेस नेता @RahulGandhi को संसद भवन के बाहर से दिल्ली पुलिस ने हिरासत में लिया। pic.twitter.com/wFoGErs8Ks— INC TV (@INC_Television) July 26, 2022Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden said, “We were holding a peaceful protest to give a petition to the President of India, but were attacked by the police. All the MPs, including Rahul Gandhi, have been arrested and taken to police stations.”The Congress MPs had earlier met in the parliament complex as party chief Sonia Gandhi appeared before the ED.They also staged a protest in front of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in the complex.AICC general secretary Ajay Maken claimed they were denied permission to organise a satyagraha outside Rajghat, the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi.“It is very unfortunate that the Government of India has refused to give permission to us to stage a satyagraha. It is the same BJP which organised a protest on June 5, 2015 in support of Baba Ramdev in 2005,” Maken had said.“This work is being done with political vendetta in mind against the opposition party and our leaders are being harassed only with this objective,” Maken charged. He also alleged that Congress members were not allowed entry into their own office.Rahul Gandhi was also questioned by the ED in the same case last month in sessions that clocked more than 50 hours over five days.(With PTI inputs)
