Karnataka chief minister D.K. Shivakumar and Kerala chief minister V.D. Satheeshan also joined the protest outside Modi’s official residence. The MPs said that they had come to Modi’s residence seeking answers as they were not allowed to debate in parliament.“We have marched to PM Modi’s house to demand answers from him for the brutalities against young students yesterday. The Government doesn’t want to take any accountability or does it want to have a debate on it in Parliament. PM and HM must resign for destroying the future of India’s youth,” Gandhi wrote in a post on X.We have marched to PM Modi’s house to demand answers from him for the brutalities against young students yesterday. The Government doesn’t want to take any accountability or does it want to have a debate on it in Parliament.PM and HM must resign for destroying the future of… pic.twitter.com/gnU3ZkRKDx— Rahul Gandhi (@RahulGandhi) July 21, 2026In another post, Gandhi underlined that Modi won’t be able to “escape without giving answers”.“An attack on students is an attack on every Indian family. Prime Minister Modi thinks he can escape without giving answers, without facing any consequences – he won’t be able to, not at all this time. I appeal to every patriotic Indian who believes that our students should get justice – join our dharna in front of the Prime Minister’s residence,” the LoP in Lok Sabha wrote. He added, “The voice of India’s students cannot be ignored. An attack on students is an attack on every Indian family. PM Modi believes he can get away without answers, without consequences. He cannot. Not this time. I ask every patriotic Indian who believes our students deserve justice – join us in dharna in front of the Prime Minister’s residence. We wanted to speak to Modi, that is why we came here to tell him that the education minister must resign, there should be action against the Delhi Police,” said Congress’ whip in the Lok Sabha Manickam B. Tagore. “The home minister is responsible for it, Modi is responsible for it. He cannot run away from responsibility. We are not being allowed to meet him inside and he is not meeting us outside and they are detaining the MPs here,” he added. Earlier on Tuesday, Gandhi, speaking to reporters outside parliament said that Modi must issue an apology and while Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan must resign, he is only an intermediary, as the policy brutality was unleashed not by him but by Union home minister Amit Shah, who reports to Modi and both should resign. Also read: Seven Reasons Why This Massive Students’ Protest in Delhi is Different and Has Rattled the Modi Regime“Dharmendra Pradhan is an intermediary, absolutely he should resign. But Dharmendra Pradhan hasn’t beaten up these students. Home minister [Amit Shah] has, he should resign. And home minister reports to prime minister, he should resign. What is going on?” said Gandhi.Gandhi along with other INDIA bloc MPs including from the Samajwadi Party, Shiv Sena (UBT), Left parties met Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla and demanded a discussion in parliament on the “brutality” unleashed on students. Gandhi alleged that Birla had informed the MPs that he would have to take the government’s “permission” to allow a debate in parliament.“We went to the speaker and we said that we want a discussion on students’ issues. The speaker said that he would have to take the government’s permission for the discussion. The speaker is telling us that to debate in parliament he has to take permission from the government. He is openly telling us,” said Gandhi outside parliament to reporters.Gandhi said that Modi had not even issued an apology and questioned why he had remained silent.“The issue is of students and what is happening is that they are being beaten up, this is completely un-Indian. Modi has not even apologised for what has happened yesterday. The youth are protesting against the education system and testing system which has broken and ceased to exist. The testing system has been hollowed out by termites. There’s nothing wrong in what they are saying. We have been saying it. Why is the Prime Minister silent? What is the reason? He should apologise to the students. And he should stop this nonsense of police thrashing students. This is completely wrong.”
