New Delhi: The opposition on Wednesday (August 5) kept up the pressure on the government both inside and outside parliament, demanding Union home minister Amit Shah’s statement on the police action on protesters last month, protesting the Ram Temple donation theft by taking out a march to the Gandhi statue, and raising loud slogans inside the House as two Bills were passed in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.While the Lok Sabha passed the Bankers’ Books Evidence Bill, 2026 without any debate, the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 was passed in the Rajya Sabha following a walkout by the opposition.The day started with opposition MPs marching to the Gandhi statue, carrying banners against Shah and shouting slogans such as “Chadhava chor, gaddi chhod” (‘donation thief, leave your seat’).Opposition MPs of the INDIA bloc held a banner that read “Amit Shah jawab do” (‘Amit Shah give an answer’), as well as placards saying that the home minister had “ordered” the shooting of students.In a statement on X, Congress president and leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said that “INDIA demands answers”.“Why is the Home Minister shying away from making a statement in the Parliament on the atrocities perpetrated against our youth? In the Rajya Sabha, question hour also saw loud protests by the opposition.When the Lok Sabha reconvened at 2 pm, the Bankers’ Books Evidence Bill was taken up amid loud protests by the opposition. BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, who was presiding over the proceedings, said that the opposition MPs who had given amendments should move to their seats and then asked finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman to move the Bill for consideration. The Bill was subsequently passed by a voice vote amid the din.Union parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju then rose from his seat and said the Bill was passed without discussion due to the opposition, and accused the Congress, Left parties and the Samajwadi Party of being against lord Ram.“The finance minister’s important Bill that was passed without discussion was due to the opposition. We allotted time for a discussion. The Congress party, communist party and Samajwadi Party oppose lord Ram, and even when the Ram Mandir was being constructed they had opposed it wearing black bands in parliament. The Congress, communist party and Samajwadi Party should apologise to the nation,” he said.The House was then adjourned for the day.In the Rajya Sabha, the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill was taken up at 2 pm amid opposition demands for a statement from Shah. The opposition staged a walkout after deputy chairman Harivansh interrupted Congress MP Vivek Tankha’s speech, objecting to him raising issues that did not pertain to the Bill.Tankha in his speech had referred to the reading down of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019 and the promise of statehood that has not yet been fulfilled. Trinamool Congress MP Menaka Guruswamy too raised the demand for Shah’s presence in the House but she was also interrupted by the chair.“Government cannot decide what a member of parliament should or should not say in the House,” said Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain to reporters after the walkout.Hussain said that Tankha was reminding the government of its repeated assurances before the Supreme Court, parliament and the people of Jammu and Kashmir that full statehood would be restored, as well as of the promises made by the prime minister and the home minister.“He wanted to remind the prime minister and the government but his mic was switched off and the chair said that nothing will go on record. This kind of authoritarianism will not work, we will continue to raise demand for statehood for Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.The Bill was passed following the opposition walkout and a discussion that lasted a little over two hours.
