New Delhi: The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Thursday (April 24) adopted a resolution in the wake of the targeted attack in Pahalgam in which 26 civilians were killed and said questions must be raised on intelligence failures and security lapses. While the resolution named Pakistan for masterminding “cowardly and calculated act of terror” through “deliberate targeting of Hindus” that the party said was “done to inflame passions across the country,” it also questioned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for “exploiting this grave tragedy through official and proxy social media platforms to sow further discord”.The CWC meeting was called on Thursday following the attack in Pahalgam on Tuesday. The meeting came hours before an all-party meeting being convened by the government.“This cowardly and calculated act of terror, mastermind by Pakistan, is a direct assault on the values of our Republic. The deliberate targeting of Hindus was done to inflame passions across the country,” the resolution said.“We appeal for calm in the face of this grave provocation and reaffirm our collective strength in the face of adversity. The CWC appeals for calm and reaffirms the Indian National Congress’ longstanding resolve to combat cross-border terrorism with determination and unity.”The party said in the resolution that it had asked for an all-party meeting, which is being organised today. It also raised questions about security lapses and intelligence failures in heavily guarded Pahalgam.“Pahalgam is known to be a heavily guarded area, secured by a three-tier security arrangement. It is imperative that a comprehensive analysis is conducted into the intelligence failures and security lapses that enabled such an attack in a Union Territory — an area directly under the purview of the Union Home Ministry,” the resolution said.“These questions must be raised in the larger public interest. This is the only way justice can truly be seen to be served for the families whose lives have been so brutally devastated.”BJP’s ‘discord’The resolution also accused the BJP of exploiting the tragedy through “official and proxy social media platforms to further discord, mistrust, polarisation and division”. “The massacre has rightly drawn condemnation from all political parties in Jammu and Kashmir and from a wide cross-section of its citizens. However, it is shocking that the BJP is exploiting this grave tragedy through official and proxy social media platforms to sow further discord, mistrust, polarisation and division at a time when unity and solidarity is most needed,” the CWC resolution said.On Tuesday, the BJP’s Chhattisgarh X handle posted an AI generated Studio Ghibli image of the victims of the attack with the caption: “Dharm poocha, jaati nahi (Asked for religion, not caste).” The post was slammed by opposition leaders who accused the BJP for having “zero sympathy” for those who lost their lives in the attack. The CWC meeting was attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Committee chairperson Sonia Gandhi, leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi along with other top party leaders.
