New Delhi: The opposition on Thursday (July 23) kept the pressure on the government both inside and outside parliament amid the ongoing youth protest, by insisting that no discussion can take place in parliament until Union education minister resigns, and later taking out a symbolic visit to Gandhi Smriti on Tees January Marg, where Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated, expressing solidarity with the students who met with brutal police action on Monday.“Our leader Mahatma Gandhi ji was assassinated over here. Today, the Modi government is assassinating democracy in India, brutalising students, and beating students. The opposition is not going to accept this. We are with the students, and Mr. Narendra Modi has to remove the education minister and apologise,” said leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi to reporters at Gandhi Smriti.Gandhi was joined by other opposition MPs from the Left parties, TMC, RJD, JMM among others, except DMK and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) who were not present at the march. The opposition leaders paid tributes to the students who had died by suicide, and those who faced the police’s brute force on Monday in Delhi.Follow live updates.While the opposition members had first planned to go by bus to India Gate and then walk to Gandhi Smriti, they were refused permission by the Delhi Police. Later, the opposition MPs were allowed to proceed to Gandhi Smriti where they paid tribute to Gandhi.“We have come here as the foundation of our country that Mahatma Gandhi laid was non-violence. On Wednesday Gandhi addressed a press conference in which he said that Pradhan must resign, those responsible for the police action should be held accountable and Modi should apologise.Inside the house, too the opposition kept up the pressure on the government and said that no discussion on exam paper leaks, or NEET can take place until Pradhan is removed.“I would request the government come forward and give a statement on the demand for resignation of the education minister. Thousands are protesting, they were lathicharged many are hospitalised. Their parents are worried. I urge you to get the education minister’s resignation, we are ready for a discussion. Until the resignation comes, the discussion cannot happen,” said leader of opposition Mallikarjun Kharge in the Rajya Sabha.While leader of the house and Union minister J.P. Nadda said that the opposition’s statement was “irresponsible”.“They wanted a discussion on paper leaks and we said we are ready. But today they have changed their demand and started talking about resignation,” said Nadda but he was cut off by Chairman C.P. The Wire has learnt that while floor leaders are in touch, the opposition is firm that no discussion can take place until Pradhan resigns.The impasse in the House came after Modi issued his first statement on the ongoing youth protests on Thursday morning and promised that fast track courts will be set up and promised swift and stringent action against paper leaks. The Wire has reported that barring fast track courts, Modi has made a similar promise at least 4 times in the last three years alone.However, Modi’s statement on Thursday made no mention of the demands for Pradhan’s resignation both inside the parliament and on the streets, nor did he speak of the police’s brute force unleashed on students on Monday.
