New Delhi: As former Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal, his former deputy Manish Sisodia and others were cleared of all charges in the alleged liquor scam, the opposition has come forward to accuse the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), now the ruling party in the national capital, of filing a “fabricated” case and “weaponising” investigative agencies for political gains. On Friday (February 27), Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court discharged Kejriwal and Sisodia and slammed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for lapses in the investigation and the “voluminous chargesheet” which was not supported by any witness or statement.A teary-eyed Kejriwal was seen speaking to the media after the verdict, saying the court order proved that BJP’s accusations were false and that AAP leaders were honest. “We have always said that the truth wins. PM [Narendra] Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah conspired against AAP and arrested the party’s five biggest leaders. They wanted to finish AAP. A sitting chief minister was arrested. This had never happened in India,” Kejriwal told reporters outside Rouse Avenue court.Tamil Nadu chief minister M.K. Stalin slammed the BJP, accusing it of using probe agencies for “short-term politics”.“The Union BJP government must not mortgage the integrity of investigating agencies for short-term politics. Have some shame. Well done, my respected friend Thiru. @ArvindKejriwal, and Thiru. @msisodia, for standing firm through it all and letting the truth speak for itself,” he said in a post on X.Trinamool Congress national spokesperson Saket Gokhale said, “A fake fabricated case was filed by the BJP to defame Opposition leaders who were arrested & mistreated in order to break their will & tarnish their reputation. Yet again, BJP’s shameless tactic of using CBI & ED as their political tools stands exposed. The Modi-Shah Govt will soon fall apart just like these fake cases.”He congratulated Kejriwal and Sisodia for “winning against this injustice”. “Your TRUTH stands vindicated & we salute the courage you showed throughout this entire ordeal,” he said.Speaking to reporters in Delhi, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav said, “BJP is using ED, CBI for electoral gains. The court order today proved this. The court even said that a case should be filed against the CBI’s IO (investigating officer) as well. Agencies keep filing false cases against opposition parties… The BJP uses this to defame people. We too have faith in the judiciary that in the coming times, we will also get justice.”The Communist Party of India (Marxist), in a statement on X, accused the Modi government of ‘weaponising’ the country’s investigative agencies and using them as “tools of political vendetta” that now “stands fully exposed”.“The Modi Govt’s weaponisation of investigating agencies as tools of political vendetta stands fully exposed once more: after years of fabricated charges, prolonged incarceration & vicious smear campaigns, the courts have discharged Kejriwal & Sisodia in the so-called liquor “scam” – proving no conspiracy, no criminal intent existed beyond the vendetta-driven witch-hunt against opposition voices,” the party stated in a post on X.‘Predictable script’Congress spokesperson compared the BJP to an “icchadhari naag” – wishful serpent – and claimed that the court’s decision to give a clean chit to Kejriwal was a “predictable script” from the BJP, while alleging that proceedings against its “convenient allies” in the AAP will quietly disappear in light of the elections in Gujarat and Punjab.“The BJP is not a political party. It is a shape-shifter, a wishful serpent – Icchadhari Naag. It will stoop to any level for one obsessive goal: defeat Congress – Congress Mukt Bharat. For 12 years they spewed venom at the TMC. And now? Narendra Modi himself is showering it with praise – not out of respect, but to land a cheap blow at Congress,” the Congress leader said in a post on X.“Elections are coming. So the script is predictable. Cases against Congress leaders will suddenly accelerate – @PChidambaram_IN has already been dragged back into the spotlight because Tamil Nadu is going for polls. Meanwhile, proceedings against their convenient “allies” in the AAP and others will quietly vanish in light of the Gujarat and Punjab elections. This is the BJP playbook: vendetta as governance and agencies as campaign tools,” he added.AAP says ‘truth cannot be defeated’Addressing a press conference, AAP leader and former environment minister of Delhi, Gopal Rai said that the court’s decision made it clear that the alleged liquor policy scam against the party leaders was “nothing but a dirty political conspiracy by the BJP”.“Today, in Delhi, the court has given a historic verdict. The way the BJP-led Union government, the prime minister and home minister themselves and leaders of the BJP, filed this fabricated case and sent the chief minister and deputy chief minister to jail to remove the AAP from legislature; the way it spread false accusations of a liquor scam, was a constitutional murder. Today, the court’s verdict has proved that truth can be contested but not defeated,” he said at the briefing.‘Kejriwal making political allegations’: BJPMeanwhile, BJP spokesperson and member of parliament, Sudhanshu Trivedi alleged that the former Delhi CM was making “political allegations” even as he issued many “apologies” – before the Supreme Court and before a number of BJP leaders – and that the people of Delhi have already given him their verdict in the elections last year.“I believe that if Arvind Kejriwal is making political allegations, then he is one of the most unprecedented figures in India’s political history. We were formed from the Jana Sangh in 1951, and today it has been 75 years. Not even for a single day have we joined hands with the Congress. He joined hands with them within 75 days. And then, leave that aside he takes oaths on children, lives in a palace worth crores, puts on a simple pen, and makes it seem as if he has taken a shirt straight out of a cooking pot and is wearing it. After that, there are curtains worth Rs 3 crores in the house,” Trivedi said. “He is among the few leaders who has issued apologies before the Supreme Court. He has apologised not once but several times – even before leaders of the BJP including Nitin Gadkari, late Arun Jaitley, Kapil Sibal and perhaps, also Manish Tiwari. The people of Delhi have given him their verdict already,” he said, adding that the probe agencies will take future decisions regarding the technicalities of the case.
