New Delhi: Following the National Testing Agency’s (NTA) cancellation of the NEET-UG 2026 examination, the opposition Congress in Rajasthan has questioned the state police Special Operations Group (SOG)’s delay in registering an FIR in the alleged paper leak case, even as nearly 15 individuals had been detained for questioning, and some reportedly arrested. The cancellation of the NEET examination that was held on May 3 has left more than 22 lakh medical aspirants and their families anxious about what will happen next as they await fresh dates, admit cards, exam centres and the counselling timeline. The SOG has been investigating for the past week to verify whether the circulation of the material was linked to organised crime. However, on Tuesday (May 12), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the probe on the Union government’s direction, and registered a case. Speaking to reporters outside his residence, former chief minister Ashok Gehlot accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of trying to suppress the matter. He said the “true face” of the BJP government had been exposed after the entrance exam’s cancellation, indicating large-scale malpractices, as quoted by The Hindu.“It is incomprehensible why the SOG did not register a criminal case in the matter. The paper leak has left our youngsters very distressed… It is a big challenge. Were the SOG officers under instructions not to reveal the details?” Gehlot said, as per the daily. He reportedly also brought up the recent OMR sheet scam in Rajasthan “BJP government in Rajasthan had earlier tried to conceal the OMR sheet scam in the Rajasthan Staff Selection Board to avoid embarrassment to the government. Weak legal representation in the case resulted in the accused securing bail,” he claimed.Leader of opposition in the state assembly Tika Ram Jully alleged that the NEET-UG cancellation was proof of “organised irregularities” and that the state government had put the future of students at stake by hiding the matter. The alleged irregularities reportedly involve ‘a guess paper’ circulated before the exam that reportedly contained approximately 410 questions out of which around 120 closely matched the questions that appeared in the actual paper.Meanwhile, Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee president Govind Singh Dotasra alleged that the exam’s cancellation had exposed the “collusion” between the BJP government and the paper leak mafia.“Instances of influential BJP leaders having links with the mafia are coming to light. The nation expects that the CBI will conduct an impartial investigation and ensure the harshest possible punishment for the guilty,” Dotasra said, as per The Hindu. How far has the probe progressed?According to an India Today report, investigators brought in two brothers for questioning – Dinesh and Mangilal Biwal – from Rajasthan’s Jamwa Ramgarh, who allegedly bought this year’s NEET-UG paper from a doctor in Gurugram for Rs 30 lakh on April 26. The trio forms a key link in the case so far. Dinesh Biwal also reportedly has links with the BJP.A medical student from Maharashtra’s Nashik has been arrested in the case, The New Indian Express reported. Earlier, the Rajasthan Police SOG also arrested five persons from Dehradun. While the NTA is yet to issue detailed guidelines, including the date for the re-conduct, the agency has said that the registration data and candidature from the May 2026 cycle will be carried forward to the new examination date, as per PTI.No additional examination fee will be charged, the agency said, and any fees already paid by students will be refunded. The NTA has maintained that the examination was conducted under a “full security protocol”, including GPS-tracked movement of question papers, biometric verification, AI-assisted CCTV monitoring and deployment of 5G jammers, PTI reported. The agency has urged students and parents to only rely on official channels for communication; helplines are neet-ug@nta.ac.in, 011-40759000 and 011-69227700.
