New Delhi: The National Conference (NC), the party which is in power in Jammu and Kashmir, has not received any communication from the Union government for the all party meeting scheduled on Thursday (April 24) on the Pahalgam terror attack, The Wire has learnt.Sources told The Wire that the government has planned to invite only those parties that have five or more members in parliament. The move has been questioned by AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi who said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) itself does not have a majority in parliament, and all parties must be invited to make it “a real all-party” meeting. Later in the day, Owaisi told the news agency ANI that he spoke over phone with the Union home minister, who asked him to come.“I will book the earliest ticket and reach for the all-party meeting (in Delhi)…” he told ANI.While the NC has only two MPs in Lok Sabha, sources in the party said that it was not in the know of whether only those parties with five or more MPs are being invited as its representatives received no communication on the all-party meeting in Delhi at the time of writing this report.“We have not received any communication on an all-party meeting. The chief minister Omar Abdullah was not invited to the security meeting called by home minister Amit Shah held in Srinagar. The issue may be raised by him during the all-party meeting in Srinagar this afternoon,” a source in the National Conference told The Wire.Sources said that the communication sent to parties on the all-party meet stated that one representative from only those parties with five or more MPs will be called for the meeting. The communication did not state who will be chairing the meeting from the government’s side.“The move to keep only those parties which have five or more MPs excludes the NC, the very party which has its government in Jammu and Kashmir,” said Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh to The Wire.Owaisi’s earlier statementOwaisi said in a statement said that he had spoken with Union minister for parliamentary affairs Kiren Rijiju on the night of April 24. Rijiju purportedly told Owaisi that the government is thinking of inviting of only those parties with five or 10 MPs and then proceeded to crack a joke when the Hyderabad MP raised the concern of smaller parties not being invited.“Regarding the Pahalgam All Party Meeting, I spoke to Kiren Rijiju last night. He said they’re thinking of inviting only parties with ‘5 or 10 MPs.’ When I asked why not parties with fewer MPs, he said that the meeting would get ‘too long’. When I asked ‘What about us, the smaller parties?’ He joked that my voice is anyway too loud,” Owaisi wrote on X.“This is not a BJP’s or another party’s internal meeting, it is an all party meeting to send a strong and united message against terrorism & those countries that harbour terrorists. Can’t Narendra Modi spend an extra hour to hear the concerns of all parties?”Owaisi said that the BJP itself does not have a majority in parliament, and all parties must be heard.“Your own party does not have a majority. Whether it is a party with 1 MP or a 100, they were both elected by Indians and deserve to be heard on such an important matter. This is not a political issue, it is a national issue. Everyone must be heard. I urge Narendra Modi to make this a real ALL Party Meeting, every party with an MP in Parliament must be invited,” he said.It is also not clear whether prime minister Modi himself will be attending the all-party meeting. While Modi cancelled an official government programme scheduled in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur in the wake of the Pahalgam attack, he has continued with his scheduled visit to poll-bound Bihar today. Sources in the JD(U) said that the party will however, be attending the all-party meeting and will support the government in any strong action that it decides to take.
