Kolkata: The Congress candidate for the Nandigram bypolls in Bengal was arrested hours after Mamata Banerjee announced that her party would support him today.Sanchita Pradhan De, the Trinamool Congress candidate, withdrew her nomination today, after Banerjee β the former supremo of the TMC β lost her party name and symbol to a rebel faction.Banerjee announced that she would support the Congress bypoll candidate for the crucial Nandigram seat, where a bypoll is necessitated by the fact that Bharatiya Janata Party chief minister Suvendu Adhikari contested from two seats.Police, under Adhikari’s direct control, have arrested Milan Pradhan, the Congress candidate, in an old murder case filed during the 2007 Nandigram anti-land acquisition protests, reports say. Nandigram has defined the careers of not just Mamata Banerjee but also Suvendu Adhikari, once her trusted lieutenant.The arrested Congress candidate may be produced before the Haldia court on Saturday, Anandabazar Patrika has reported.Saturday is the last day for filing nominations.Pradesh Congress president Shubhankar Sarkar was quoted by Anandabazar as having said, βThe BJP is trying to establish one-party rule. Will there be no opposition politics left in this country?β.
