New Delhi: Multiple FIRs have been filed against Assam Congress president Bhupen Borah by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) youth wing for his remarks on lord Krishna and the term ‘love-jihad’, the Assam Tribune reported. The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) filed an FIR against Borah in Guwahati city district for commenting on lord Krishna’s marriage to Rukmini. Borah was reacting to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s statement on the triple murder case from Golaghat which the latter had called an instance of “love-jihad, the report said.In response, Borah had said cross-marrying “is not a new thing” and that “there are many examples in history” when he gave lord Krishna’s marriage with Rukmini as an example of that.On Thursday, July 27, Sarma had said that the Congress leader would be arrested if an FIR is filed against him for making contentious statements regarding lord Krishna, the report said.Meanwhile, the Silchar unit of BJYM and BJP workers in Bajali also filed FIRs against Borah in their respective districts and demanded immediate action against him.On Friday, July 28, Borah apologised for his comment on lord Krishna claiming that his grandfather appeared to him in a dream and told him his words were wrong, the Indian Express reported. He said he wasn’t apologising out of fear of the chief minister but because his comments might not have been well received by the Vaishnavite community.“The Chief Minister had requested for my arrest. I was instructed to stop visiting Namghars. I beg them not to prevent me from going to Namghars. Instead, shoot me dead during a police encounter,” Borah was quoted by the Assam Tribune as saying.Borah told The Wire that the police had not got in touch with him yet, adding that it was “a genuine slip of tongue” for which he apologised profusely.“In this country, if you are a bhakt then sau khoon maaf (you are allowed a hundred crimes). But if you are not, one should be prepared for all kinds of harassment,” Borah said.He also questioned why those who threaten genocide are not pursued with the same proactiveness, alluding to Pramot Singh – the chief of the Meitei Leepun – who openly expressed his contempt for the Kuki community in an interview with The Wire.It may be noted that ‘love jihad’ is a term often brought up by the BJP and its ideological affiliates, claiming that Muslim men are luring and forcing Hindu women into marriage to convert them. No empirical evidence has been found for such claims.
