New Delhi: Among the various opposition MPs who are currently on their way to Jantar Mantar is CPI(M)’s John Brittas, who spoke to The Wire over video from the bus with the MPs.Last month, Brittas wrote to the President, Draupadi Murmu, asking her to take action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, against whose conduct of the special intensive revision the ongoing protests are taking place. Brittas said that he has now received a response, saying that the letter has been forwarded to the legislative department and that appropriate action will be taken.“According to me, the appropriate action would be to dismiss Gyanesh Kumar. Still, at a time when we haven’t received an appointment, a reply from Rashtrapati Bhavan saying that the letter has forwarded is in itself encouraging,” he said.He also told The Wire that the group of opposition MPs from the India Alliance have taken the call to continue their protest.“75 to 80 MPs – Rahul Gandhi, Malikkarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi and leaders of the India bLOC parties – decided that they should continue the protest,” he said. “Moreover, this a time when protests seem to be banned and Jantar Mantar, which used to be conventionally the protest area has been cordoned off,” he said.Brittas emphasised that while the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar is imperative, their protest was also to reclaim the “democratic processes of the country.”“We feel that something needs to be done urgently so that the constitutional provisions are enacted, or rather, restored. We’re going to continue, and also intensify our agitation,” he said.Brittas was part of the MPs’ delegation which was intercepted on their way to the Election Commission of India yesterday, leading to an eight-hour sit-in.In the letter, Brittas refers to the Indian Express investigation, which highlighted the discontent brewing in the Election Commission over the ongoing SIR. The letter asks the President to ensure that the concers raised by the two ECs receive “the highest institutional scrutiny,” particularly regarding the modification of Form 6 and voter deletions.Screengrab of MP John Brittas’s letter to President Droupadi Murmu. Immediate safeguards should also be put in place against irreversible exclusion of eligible electors, with preservation of the complete electronic and administrative audit trail relating to the SIR for judicial and parliamentary scrutiny,” he further wrote.
