New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (December 19) accused opposition parties of trying to justify the security breach in Parliament last week when on December 13 two men jumped from the public gallery into the Lok Sabha hall and opened smoke canisters.Addressing the Bharatiya Janata Party parliamentary party meeting on Tuesday, Modi said that more than the security breach, what was worrisome is the attempt to justify the incident by certain opposition parties.Modi’s statement on the security breach comes as opposition parties have been demanding a statement from Union home minister Amit Shah inside the house. While Shah is yet to speak in parliament he has accused the opposition of politicising the issue in an interview with a television news channel. Modi too has not yet spoken in parliament on the issue but said to Hindi daily Dainik Jagran that the “security breach was serious and cannot be underestimated.”Dozens of opposition MPs who have been demanding a statement from Shah in the House, and a discussion in both Houses, are facing mass suspensions in parliament.“On the security breach in Parliament the prime minister said that anyone who believes in democracy should condemn this incident. We all should have collectively condemned it but some parties who are disappointed after results of recent state elections are using samarthan ki bhasha (trying to justify the breach) which is more dangerous than the incident itself,” said Union parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi to reporters after the meeting.#WATCH | On the BJP Parliamentary Party meeting today, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi says, “The PM spoke about the Parliament (security breach) incident and said that those who believe in democracy should have condemned this incident, but some parties who lost in recent elections… pic.twitter.com/VYDFDTedI2— ANI (@ANI) December 19, 2023Initial reports by the police suggest that the six youth who protested last week (including the two who stormed the Lok Sabha) wanted to highlight the failure of the political class to discuss issues like unemployment, price rise and ethnic violence in Manipur.Six people have been arrested in connection with the incident. However, BJP MP Pratap Simha, who provided passes to those who breached the Lok Sabha, is yet to face any action.Modi’s statement on Tuesday alludes to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi who said last week that the reason behind the Parliament security breach was rising unemployment in the country.“There has definitely been a security lapse, but the reason behind it is the country’s biggest issue – unemployment which the whole country is facing due to Modi’s policies. The youth are not getting jobs. Yes, there has been a breach but the reason behind it is unemployment and price rise,” Gandhi said on December 16.BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad, who also attended the parliamentary party meeting, said that the prime minister had expressed pain about the security breach.“PM Modi expressed pain over the incident that happened in the Parliament,” he said to ANI.“Parliament is a place where discussions should be held. Various bills which are important to pave the way for the progress of the country should be discussed in the Parliament. Those who are blocking and obstructing the work of parliament is due to their loss in three state elections. But more than that, what is more worrisome, is that they are trying to justify directly or indirectly what these youngsters did in breaching parliament security. How can any party that believes in democracy seek to covertly or overtly justify what happened in the Parliament? The probe is underway.”
