New Delhi: After December 3 ended with the Bharatiya Janata Party sweeping three out of four state assembly elections, all eyes were on Mizoram today where counting of votes in 40 constituencies began at 8 am. By the afternoon, it was clear that the Zoram People’s Movement would be coming to power, winning 27 seats. The ruling Mizo National Front came in at a distant second, with 10 seats.The single phase elections was conducted on November 7. As many as 174 candidates are in the fray including 16 women, in a three-corner contest.As many as 80.43% voters had cast their ballot.For the first time in Mizoram’s history, the assembly elections witnessed a three-corner contest. With the ZPM topping the tally, it will not only register as a new regional party to have grabbed power in the northeast but will also make Mizoram break out of the typical bipolar contest for power between MNF and the Congress.Note: The live blog may take a few seconds to load.
