New Delhi: The Union government has extended the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) companies in Delhi till November 16, ahead of the INDIA bloc rally at Ramlila Maidan on November 1. This is the third extension of the CAPF deployment in New Delhi this month. Around 270 companies have been deployed in the national capital since the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests began in early October. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs approved the extension from October 31 to November 16 at the request of the Delhi police, news agency PTI reported. According to the report, the decision was taken in view of the INDIA bloc’s ‘Challo Dili’ rally, the possibility of “flash protests” by certain groups amid other law and order requirements during the ongoing festival season. The Delhi police has been asked to coordinate the deployment of the forces.Of the 270 companies, 125 are from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), including 17 women personnel units; 20 from the Rapid Action Force (RAF); 46 from the Border Security Force (BSF); 39 from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP); 31 from the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB); and 12 from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the report said. Each CAPF company has a sanctioned strength of 100 personnel, however they have only 70-72 personnel. The forces were initially brought to Delhi following CJP protests earlier this month. On October 9, the CJP held protests seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition parties subsequently held protests with the same demand, followed by a ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ demonstration by the CJP on October 16. The CJP and the INDIA bloc have backed each other’s protest calls despite uncertainty about the relationship between the two.
