New Delhi: People’s Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti has said that she has been placed under house arrest in the course of Union home minister Amit Shah’s visit, calling Jammu and Kashmir Police’s claim otherwise a lie.“While HM (Home Minister) is going around Kashmir beating drums of normalcy, I am under house arrest for simply wanting to visit Pattan for a worker’s wedding,” she tweeted on the morning of October 5.Mufti’s tweet was accompanied by the photograph of the main gate of her house, locked from the outside. Her tweet tagged Amit Shah and Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. The former is visiting the Union Territory and is scheduled to address a public rally in Baramulla town later today. Baramulla and Pattan, where Mufti was supposed to travel to, are 27 kilometres apart. While HM is going around Kashmir beating drums of normalcy,I am under house arrest for simply wanting to visit Pattan for a worker’s wedding. If an ex CM’s fundamental rights can be suspended so easily, one cant even imagine the plight of a commoner.@AmitShah @manojsinha_ pic.twitter.com/5dYSfk8j1f— Mehbooba Mufti (@MehboobaMufti) October 5, 2022“If an ex CM’s fundamental rights can be suspended so easily, one can’t even imagine the plight of a commoner,” Mufti added.Quote-tweeting Mufti, Srinagar Police issued a tweet claiming “no restriction of any kind” was placed on Mufti’s plans to travel to Pattan. The lock, police claimed, was put there by “residents who stay in the bunglow (sic).”It is clarified that no restriction of any kind travel to pattan, travel to pattan was at 1 pm as intimated to us. The picture tweeted by her is of inside of the gate with own lock of residents who stay in the bunglow. There is no lock or any restrictions. She is free to travel. https://t.co/YMccUwDSh4 pic.twitter.com/kG5Luhj7Bm— Srinagar Police (@SrinagarPolice) October 5, 2022In response, Mufti noted that she was informed last night itself that she would not be allowed to travel to Pattan. She also tagged the Baramulla Superintendent of Police Rayees Mohammad Bhat, who purportedly intimated the ban to her.Mufti said J&K Police, who had themselves locked her gates were “lying through their teeth.”I was informed last night by SP Baramulla @bhatray that I wouldn’t be allowed to travel to Pattan. Today @JmuKmrPolice have themselves locked my gates from inside & are now lying through their teeth. Sad that law enforcement agencies are brazenly trying to cover up their tracks. https://t.co/1giIjfy0eE— Mehbooba Mufti (@MehboobaMufti) October 5, 2022After August 5, 2019, when the Union government read down Article 370 and bifurcated the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, Mufti was one of the many local political leaders placed under detention and then house arrest. She was released in October 2020, 14 months later. Even since then, she has alleged several times that she was placed under temporary “illegal detention”.
