New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday, August 1, revoked the suspension of four Congress members, after party leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said it was not the intention of the opposition to hurt the chair.Congress members Manickam Tagore, Ramya Haridas, T.N. Prathapan and S. Jothimani were suspended last Monday for the rest of the session for protesting and carrying placards inside the House – against price rise.As many as 20 MPs remain suspended from the Upper House of the parliament, the Rajya Sabha.Initially on Monday, Speaker Birla adjourned the proceedings till noon as opposition members raised slogans, asking for the suspension to be revoked just after the House convened.Slogans were also raised by opposition members against the Narendra Modi-led Union government, over the alleged targeting of opposition leaders by central investigative agencies.Birla said such protests “lowered the dignity of the House.” NDTV has reported that he later convened a meeting of all parties to discuss a way out of the impasse.After the House re-assembled, BJP member Rajendra Agarwal, who was in the Chair, again adjourned proceedings till 2 pm after laying of parliamentary papers on the table of the House and the introduction of the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.“Bring back suspended members”, “stop murder of democracy”, “ED sarkar hai, hai” were some of the slogans raised by the Congress members. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) members supported the Congress from their respective seats.After the House reconvened after 2 pm, the four MPs’ suspension was revoked after Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi moved a motion to the effect, which was approved by the House.The Speaker asked MPs not to bring placards into the House, to which Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury said that MPs must be allowed to lodge protests, reported NDTV.After the revocation, the House took up discussion on price rise which was initiated by Congress member Manish Tewari.(With PTI inputs)
