New Delhi: Kerala governor Arif Mohammed Khan alleged that Justice Rohinton Nariman spoke against him only because of a conflict of interest. Justice Rohinton had pulled up Khan while delivering a lecture in Mumbai in December 2023 for not signing the Bills sent by the Pinarayi Vijayan government.Speaking at an education conclave organised by The New Indian Express in Chennai on Thursday, January 25, Khan said there was a conflict of interest in Justice Rohinton commenting about him given that the latter’s father (top lawyer Fali Nariman) and his juniors were paid by the Vijayan government Rs 40 lakh for giving their legal advice.“The father is receiving money and the son is giving opinions blasting the governor. This is not following the principle of natural justice,” said Khan, reading out from a document, which he said was an order issued by the Kerala government.Justice Rohinton Nariman in his December 2023 Bansari Seth Lecture expressed concern over governors “sitting on Bills” sent by state governments, particularly in the Opposition-ruled states.Reacting to Khan’s remarks, John Brittas of the CPI(M) said, “…the governor of Kerala had the audacity to accuse a jurist like Nariman of taking 30 lakhs to ensure that his son gives a different opinion in support of Kerala government. Politics has reached such a level. You need to take back politics from this trash. A constitutional functionary, talking such nonsense in a very important summit.”
