New Delhi: With Prime Minister Narendra Modi returning from Karnataka in the evening on Sunday and conferring with others including national president J.P, Nadda, the Bharatiya Janata Party was to declare names of candidates as a first list later on Sunday or on Monday morning. But the list is not yet out. The Congress has released its second list last week.BJP chief Nadda yesterday held a meeting over the Karnataka assembly elections 2023 at his residence in Delhi and Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj S. Bommai had flown in from Bengaluru to attend the meeting. Former chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa had been “camping in Delhi since Friday” but flew back yesterday, reports The Times of India, but despite hectic meetings after the central election committee had met on Sunday, the differences between various factions are proving hard to resolve. The newspaper reports there were “certain issues to be sorted out on some senior leaders and their family members and that was delaying the list”.Reportedly, Yeddyurappa has been insisting that his son, B.S. Vijayendra, contests from Shikaripura and not Varuna, which is what the leadership is said to be keen on. Yeddyurappa has represented the district for six terms in the assembly. This is among the many “issues” leading to delays in the list. The Tribune says that the “rebel factor that played a role in the BJP’s defeat in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections last year” is making the party tread cautiously in Karnataka. It is haunted by the prospect of “accommodating turncoats whose defections in 2019 led to the fall of the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition government and installation of the BJP dispensation”. Then, 17 MLAs – 14 from the Congress and three from the JD(S) — had switched over to the BJP in 2019, helping Yediyurappa unseat the elected incumbent and become the chief minister.NDTV reports that party sources have told them that “several sitting MLAs have been dropped and Congress turncoats chosen in the BJP’s first list of candidates for Karnataka election likely to be released tonight or tomorrow, party sources have said”.It says that another meeting was held this morning at home minister Amit Shah’s residence “to fine-tune the party’s list”.
