New Delhi: Actor-turned politician Kamal Haasan will make his electoral debut in the April 6 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, contesting from Coimbatore South constituency. In the last two elections, this seat has been won by the AIADMK. Under this year’s seat-sharing arrangement, though, the seat has gone to the BJP instead of the AIADMK.The Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) president made the announcement in Chennai on Friday, releasing the second list of his party’s candidates.Remembering his late father Sreenivasan, Haasan expressed confidence that the people of his constituency would enable him to voice his views in the assembly by voting for him.“My father’s dream was I should become an IAS officer and then enter politics. Though I could not realise his dream (of becoming an IAS officer), my party comprises many (former) IAS officers. That is a proud moment for us,” he told reporters.MNM’s second list included candidates Dr Subha Charles from Kanniyakumari, Dr R. Mahendran from Singanallur, Dr Santosh Babu from Velacherry, Pazha Karupiah from T Nagar and Sharad Babu from Alandur, NDTV reported.Haasan had on Wednesday announced the first list of 70 party candidates, fielding, among others, a former associate of ex-president, the late A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. V. Sarath Kumar-headed All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi (AISMK) and India Jananayaka Katchi (IJK) of Lok Sabha MP Paarivendhar, has announced it will test its fortunes from 154 of the 234 seats, leaving the rest to its two partners.Film lyricist Snehan was among the 70 candidates Haasan named for various constituencies across the state including Kancheepuram, Mettur, Erode, Coonoor, Avanashi (SC), Viralimalai, Bodinayakkanur, Nagercoil and Colachel.The coalition, described by the respective party leaders as a “First Front” and not a “Third Front” as was being mentioned by some, has announced Haasan as its chief ministerial candidate.(With PTI inputs)
