New Delhi: Union minister Ramdas Athawale and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi called for the Indian cricket team’s T20 World Cup match against Pakistan to be called off in view of the recent targeted killings of civilians by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir.Earlier, another Union minister – Giriraj Singh – had also called for the game to be ‘reconsidered’, while Punjab minister Pargat Singh demanded the match’s cancellation.Speaking in Pune, Athawale pointed the finger at Pakistan for the spurt in terror activities in Jammu and Kashmir, including targeted killings of migrant labourers. He said India should not play the World Cup match against Pakistan on October 24 in order to “teach the latter a lesson”, according to news agency PTI.Eleven civilians have been killed by terrorists this month in Kashmir, with the latest attack on Sunday claiming the lives of two workers from Bihar. Another migrant worker was injured. The trio was attacked by terrorists who barged into their accommodation in Kulgam in south Kashmir.“If Pakistan does not stop its activities in the (Kashmir) Valley, then there has to be an aar paar ki ladaai (all-out war to settle things once and for all). In J&K, attacks are taking place on migrant labourers, local Kashmiri Pandits are being targeted. It is Pakistan’s ploy to not allow development in the Valley,” the Union minister of state for social justice and empowerment told reporters.“By resorting to such militant attacks, there is an attempt to spread fear among the workers who are coming to the Valley from UP and Bihar. But the Union government will not fall prey to such tactics and a strategy is being formed to end militancy. There is a need to conduct another surgical strike against Pakistan, which needs to vacate [Pakistan-occupied Kashmir] and stop terror activities,” the minister added.Queried on the upcoming T20 match between the two nations, Athawale said India should not play Pakistan, adding that he would express his opinion on this matter to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah.Addressing a press conference in Delhi, AAP MLA Atishi said there should not be any cricket matches between India and Pakistan until the latter stops sponsoring terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. She also called for the World Cup match to be cancelled.“In the last few days, again and again, we have seen how people are being attacked in Kashmir, be it local residents or those who have come to the Union territory from other parts of the country,” the MLA said.“I am sure that not only the AAP but even the BJP and its leadership as well as the prime minister will agree that until Pakistan stops sponsoring terror attacks in India territory, there should not be any cricket match between India and Pakistan,” she said in a press conference in Delhi. The BCCI has made it clear that it cannot cancel the match because the tournament is organised by the International Cricket Council.“We condemn these attacks [in Kashmir],” BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla said, according to News18. “As far as the match is concerned, it is a[n] international commitment. This is an ICC tournament and we cannot call it off.”Indian badminton legend Prakash Padukone, however, said the T20 World Cup match should go ahead despite the prevailing political tensions between the two countries.“I personally feel sports should not be mixed with politics and it should go ahead, that is my personal opinion. Whether it happens or not, I am no authority, I am nobody to comment,” Padukone said, according to PTI.“But if you ask my personal opinion, I think the match should go ahead. They have played in the past, so many times, so this is no different,” he added.(With PTI inputs)
