New Delhi: Amid the opposition’s ongoing protests demanding Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, the INDIA bloc has been given an appointment to meet President Droupadi Murmu at 8 pm on Friday (October 9), The Wire has learnt.The President is the first constitutional authority to meet with the opposition on the matter. She is also the appointing authority of the CEC.Opposition leaders including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, TMC’s Mamata Banerjee, CPIM general secretary M.A. Baby will be part of the delegation that will meet the President tonight. The Wire has learnt that the INDIA bloc is finalising names of the delegation to include at least one representative of each political party.The appointment on Friday comes after the opposition had first written to the President’s office on October 2 but had not received any formal confirmation of a time until now.While the plan earlier was to meet at Central Hall at 3 pm and then march to Rashtrapati Bhawan if an appointment was not received. The Wire has learnt that opposition members who are present in Delhi will first meet now at the Central Hall at 5pm and then meet the President.Last month, CPI(M) MP John Brittas wrote to the President asking her to take action against Kumar. On October 7, Brittas told The Wire that he has now received a response, saying that the letter has been forwarded to the legislative department and that appropriate action will be taken.The appointment with the president comes just a day ahead of the Cockroach Janata Party’s protest in the national capital on Saturday. The opposition has in the last four days kept the heat on the government demanding Kumar’s resignation over the conduct of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls.The opposition held a silent protest on Thursday to Raj Ghat that marked a departure from the last two days. While on Tuesday, the opposition led a march from parliament to the Election Commission, which was stopped midway and subsequently saw Rahul Gandhi sit on an eight-hour protest at Akashvani Bhawan before being detained, the protest on Wednesday saw a face-off with the police, as the MPs sought to reach Jantar Mantar and were again detained.
